"Yeah, we've got-" Erosh started before stopping, his head snapping to the side.
"That's a look of something dangerous," Beth said with a frown. "But there shouldn't be anything nearby that's that strong."
"Not a what," Erosh grunted. "A who."
"Hmm," Beth replied, crossing her arms and looking in the direction that Erosh was facing.
All of the other Ascended had keyed to the disturbance at roughly the same time Erosh did, though Beth had some id...

The others ignored Beth, other than Sera, who spouted a quick gout of flame over her lover to dry her off, Beth taking the fire and manipulating it to make sure she was dry and had burnt most of the remaining dust away. She put the fire out, Sera still marveling at the amount of control Beth had, being able to snuff dragonfire with just the control from her Mana Physique alone. Beth followed along at the back of the group, stretching out as she fully returned to her regular size and proportio...

They descended, again fighting beasts, finding nothing that was a challenge, and again they were beset by a monster. It took slightly longer this time, as the group was on the edge of the ledge of that tier and ready to leap down, Blood tensing her legs right as they heard the howling and ghostly whispers. Beth just rolled her eyes, looking around coldly to find the fade, and coldly was right, as the fades showed up as areas of increased cold in her special vision. They seemed to suck the lif...

I looked at the corpse hanging from the tree and rolled my shoulder. Damn, but it had been a little while since I'd been knifed; I forgot how much it could hurt. My regenerative affinity was still working on the wound, as the healer at Pietr's wasn't all that strong, nor had I given her much time to work before taking off. I turned back to Robert's little disguised whorehouse, because that was what it really was, that and much worse, surprised to see a large gro...

"It's just one guy," Blood said, racing back up the side of the cliff before leaping over them and landing on her toes, bouncing around to face the group. "He's fighting the bigger beasts, the ones using those scream attacks. He's winning, too, by the looks of it."
"Shall we go introduce ourselves?" Beth asked.
"Careful; we don't want him to think we’re after him or his kills," Val warned.
"Relax," Beth said, waving a hand. "Is there any group out there t...

They found something rather interesting in the desert, Beth comparing maps to find that it was in what used to be the country of Chad. Beth wasn't sure if the country still even existed at this point, but there were clearly quite a few people gathered in the desert, including two large camps that, on closer inspection, appeared to be people well-used to living on the road. Perhaps nomads of some kind, used to a traveling lifestyle even before the Path appeared, the two camps were positioned c...

Running out of spikes wasn't hard, especially when they were running the golem dungeon on repeat, over and over until the mana was under control. That was a half dozen spikes used, and that wasn't counting the ones they had used before the auction. Beth made a trip to their home Hall, finagling another five spikes out of Jaq for free, who confessed they were expensive but almost went unused. The things had a shelf life measured in decades, but they had a tendency to sit around that long or lo...

The first thing they did was, surprisingly, take a break, though Beth didn't have to be pushed particularly hard on that point. They took a couple days off, Beth leaving the gate open for the others while they all went off and did their own things. She and Sera visited a very familiar place while Blood went off on her own somewhere, though Beth was pretty sure she was focusing on flying, which was a genuine passion of hers. Bjorn and Kris disappeared for a week, together, of course, and Beth ...

Being a captain in the royal guard wasn't easy, and especially one that handled certain investigations. I had been dispatched, along with my squad of six, to the estate of the grand duke, and we were currently on the train. I still wasn't sold on this rather ominous method of travel, but others constantly assured me it was safe, despite the terrible racket the thing made. It was late afternoon and we were getting close to Umberton and we had a dest...

One other, quite pleasant, surprise popped up right at the very end, one Beth hadn't been expecting because they had been flying radio silent for a bit to make it a surprise. That was the other girls showing up, that being her sisters and Sabs and Neph, when they were only about two weeks out from finishing their referee duties. The others were all leaner, meaner, and more experienced than the last time they had seen them, especially Neph, who had bloomed greatly in her time away. Beth and Bl...

There were a few items that came up next that weren't of any interest to anyone in their booth, apart from the fact that they went for fairly exorbitant prices, until another big ticket item came up that Blood was very interested in. It was a one-two whammy for her, as it was a claw skill that was also blood-related, something that would do extremely nicely for her current skill set and inclinations. Adding another attack-type skill wasn't exactly necessary for Blood right now, but the skill ...

The duels and the work dragged on, but their free time flew by, and Val disappeared after a week without even a goodbye, at least to Beth and Sera and the rest. Beth was sure she had said a rather nice goodbye to Blood, at the least, but that didn't include the rest of them. Well, Val was sometimes like that, so Beth just dismissed it as she looked towards their next goal. They had to get back to the leveling grind in a major way, though she didn't think they'd quite be ready to do ...

"What's the plan going forward?" Sera asked once everyone was settled in.
"Rebirths, leveling, spiked dungeons, yearly auction, finishing ref duty, all roughly in that order," Beth replied, ticking things off on her fingers.
"And what about you?" Sera asked, turning to Val.
"What about me?" asked Val in response.
"What are you up to? How's the whole Scions thing working out?" Sera asked.
"Well, it's going," Val said with a sigh, gett...

The next day was, thankfully, an uneventful experience that felt like things were getting back to some semblance of what normal was. The day after, however, was not, and that was mainly because both the count and the Silver Lady were at the training ground that morning. More specifically, they were waiting for me at the lane I usually used at the very far end of the grounds, clearly ready for me. I gave them both a nonplussed look as I walked over and st...

Like Beth had said, the other two items weren't nearly as worthwhile as the cube, one of them being a rare chest armor and the other being an epic dagger (and what was with all the daggers?). The cube was the real prize, after all, and Beth was sure she could pawn the chestplate and the dagger off for at least a handful of diamond coins at some point. That run had taken them only a part of the weekend, but it was still exhausting, so profession work was the next thing on the docket for them. ...

It was a month before Beth got them permission to take a slightly long weekend, which she would have felt bad about, but she knew the other Gold Emblems that were new to the Hall were taking plenty of time off themselves. That made her feel far less bad about one to two days extra to go tackle an extremely difficult dungeon. They were still mainly focused on the golem dungeon, as Beth was pretty sure that was the most dangerous of the ones they had found. The one that had started at level two...

The first of the big rewards they got wasn't even from the boss, but from the sub-bosses. There were really two rewards there, as all the sub-bosses had very valuable beast cores that were worth quite a bit. They would likely keep all of them, however, adding to their growing beast core collection, both an extra monetary fund as well as resources for crafting and rebirths. The other thing they got from several of the bosses was highly valuable ore and minerals, everything of high mana purity ...

"What exactly is going on now?" I asked as we walked to the office.
"Your parents have a rather special guest, and they would like you to meet them," he replied calmly, but I could sense the faintest hint of excitement, and perhaps even respect, in his tone.
"Interesting," was all I said, following him down the last hall and into their office.
My parents, my eldest sister, my mother's secretary, and a mysterious woman with nearly pure white hair, though I...

Sera and Blood had a bit of an easier time, of course, but that wasn't anything very strange at this point. Sera's list was worse than Blood's, in terms of rarity and price, as void-related things were not easy to come by, but Blood's list was easier than either of theirs. Easier to acquire still wasn't easy, but Blood was going to be able to get most of her materials within a few weeks just by buying them without having to go out on any crazy limbs.
Beth was thinking about the a...

Training with Bai's team was a refreshing break from their other duties and training, at least for a couple hours, but then Beth was right back to it. It was the weekend, and the five of them were doing another run of the golem facility. This time went much faster, as they had an idea of how the layout spawned; the level of dungeon they were doing now didn't always have set layouts but would sometimes spawn the instance in a random order. Still, they often had biases that would allow an exper...

Still, Beth was worried a bit too much, as even their run up to the dungeon proved. Two people with weapon skills in Master, the whole group at around level three hundred, and all of them with at least one skill in Platinum meant they were a lot stronger than Beth thought. Clearing a way up to the dungeon entrance and getting inside proved almost trivially easy, though those beasts on the outside were of a lower level than the dungeon itself. Still, they made good time even through the first ...

Another week came and went, and the referee duties were just as boring as they had been before the week of inter-Hall fun and excitement had happened. Beth was starting to get a bit of the suspicion that this was more a punishment detail than it was that much of a learning experience, at least for them, as watching a bunch of people that had barely hit level one hundred the first, or maybe the second time, fight wasn't exactly either entertaining or educational. Maybe if they had gone to anot...

ETA: You know what, on second thought, I'm not updating the chapter numbers. Just posting this to let people know the numbers will be the same. It will be an insane amount of work, and it will throw all my notes off to change all the numbers from 61-476, so scratch that idea.
I have gone through this morning and updated chapters 1-52 to reflect the edited version of Book One. These chapters are the old chapters 1-60 and you will see the table of contents and the chapters currently jump ...

"I know you know I'm in here and that it's me," I called through the shut door of my suite.
The door opened, revealing a discombobulated count, one who entered rather warily, eying me for a moment before he saw the spear. "By the heavens!"
"The heavens have nothing to do with it," I replied, rolling my eyes before sitting in the chair next to the spear. I gestured for the count to sit across from me, and he did so gingerly, eyes riveted to the artifact.
"Y...

She made it to the counter with a bit of time to spare, not really having needed to run there. The day was going to be busy, despite everything that happened yesterday, as they were still hosting the week of cheap teleports and inter-Hall competition. There were way more people there that day than there had been previously, and Beth realized she was largely responsible.
News of her fights and what had happened had traveled fast, spreading around the world in minutes, and that had...

"What about everybody against me? I need to test my new weapon skill, anyway," Beth said.
"Who does 'everybody' include?" Bai asked.

"It was not," Bai said with a sigh. "We were stronger, faster, and better in almost every way. The handicap you were under was, quite frankly, ridiculous.
