Chapter 21
Oberon
Striding toward the edge of the line, I mentally checked that all the undead were in place for the battle. I would prefer it to be quick, but the city was densely populated if nothing else. It would take some time to kill or capture everyone. It was still odd that these sorts of thoughts were with me. Now that my memories were mostly back, I could recall how hard I worked to unite and protect the races.
“An ironic turn of events, I suppose,” I mumbled while pulling Delha from my sub-dimension.
“What is?” Helena asked with a tilted head.
“The way life works. I wonder how many people would have thought that I of all people would die in such a way. And again, how many people would have thought I would return in such a fashion.”
“That’s what you’re getting at. I want to say there has to be a balancing force behind the world, but if I admit that then this endeavor is doomed before it even starts.”
“You can say that again. I’m sure it won’t be long before one of the other nations try to summon or create a hero.”
“Do you have a countermeasure planned?”
“I can’t say I don’t have one, but at the moment, I might as well not have one. I don’t have what I need to make it work.” Hero summoning was the last ditch effort back in my time. I knew of two heroes that had been created by rival nations. They ended up fighting each other to the death and it was one of the reasons that I worked to become a king and unite the peoples. If we were okay with having people from another world fighting our wars, then there was something wrong with us.
“Though, I guess it is more likely they would try to summon an angel first. Those are easier in the grand scheme of things.”
“You don’t say. I would be most interested in that magic.”
Helena pointed into the city. “They should have records in there. All of the lordships have a method or two hidden away in their towers.”
“You don’t know one?”
“Was never interested in the beings that could wipe me out with a wave of their hand. Angels are sort of my exact opposite you know.”
“Fair enough.” A pressure appeared next to me and Lenora appeared from a swirling void of ice. “Lenora,” I said then before she even dismissed her portal, I felt multiple connections to sigils in the city. I tightened my grip around Delha as I grinned. “Well done. I knew I could rely on you.”
The elf looking Lenora, stretched and her fairy wings and the magical aura that she’d been forced to suppress expanded around her. “Ah. That feels better. Anything for you master,” Lenora said with a head bob.
“I suppose we should get this party started. I’m sure they are anxious to receive their guests.”
Rolling my shoulders, I moved in front of the line of undead. Raising Delha over my head, I started to chant. Magic circles the size of houses formed around me with over thirty layers rising into the sky. Only an idiot would miss the display of magic from the enemy walls. I half expected a barrage of magic to rain down around me, but nothing happened. However, I did feel several magical auras from the city.
“Looks like they are concentrating on defense,” Lenora commented from behind me.
I would have laughed if I wasn’t busy chanting. Defense would have been a good idea if it weren’t for the magical sigils that Lenora planted for me. Even if that wasn’t the case, you should never risk a sorcerer attacking without even trying to impede them. A full hour went by with the mages in the city only reinforcing their defense.
Finishing my chant, all that remanded was the trigger word. “Maya.”
“Yes, master?” the girl said. She and Rachel were standing at the edge of the magic circle. The sheer amount of mana that flowed through it was burning the ground and turning it to slag.
“If you still have doubts that I can’t help you with your body, let this put you at ease.” I turned and flexed as I drew back to throw. The ground cracked under me as the mana in the air surged wrapping around me and the spear. I threw with all my strength and the spear accelerated through the magic circles, gaining speed and mana with each one. When it hit the last one above us, it angled almost unnaturally and flew toward the city.
“Heaven’s Fall!” I shouted spreading my arms wide. The mana surged again as the storm that raged above us parted over the city and a light that was brighter than the sun washed over the city almost perfectly outlined by the walls. Delha soared into the center of the downpouring light and angled for the center of the city.
A few barriers popped up, but they were washed away like they never existed. The spear fell and struck, nailing several dozen meters into the ground. A slow rumble grew from the direction of the city that grew to the point that some of the undead in the outskirts were having trouble standing. In the city, entire buildings were collapsing as towers made of flame burst from the ground.
The walls surrounding the city were quickly becoming nothing more than piles of debris. I could feel my level rising as I slaughtered at least twenty thousand people in the span of a few minutes. The spell wasn’t even over yet. The towers of flame were releasing elementals that would hunt down people within their vicinity.
“My lord. What was the point of bringing an army if you were going to kill them all by yourself?” Helena asked and I felt she was bewildered for once.
“What are you talking about?” I asked shaking my head. “Over half the city still remains.”
The capital was huge after all. The spell was good from doing a lot of damage initially, but destroying an area of nearly ten square kilometers took a lot of power. I could have used a few meteor spells, but that would have destroyed the facilities that I wanted to capture for information.
“Now that I look closer, you’re right. A surprising amount sit stands.”
“Exactly.” I clenched my fist then pointed into the sky. A flash of light struck the sky. As one the undead lines surrounding the city started to move forward. “Don’t let anyone escape. Let the festival of the dead begin!”
Alessa
Jade and I stood with the others from the Familia as we watched Oberon’s spell decimate a good portion of the city. Watching, I wondered if there was going to be anything left for us to do when Oberon sent up the signal to attack. The undead around us started marching in perfect order as they made for the city.
“Should we go as well?” Jade asked while checking her bow.
“Yes. I want you to stick with me again,” I replied. I couldn’t afford to lose myself again. Though, Oberon and Helena were around this time to stop me if I went crazy. I hoped it wouldn’t come to that, mainly because I knew they likely wouldn’t let me live it down.
My Familia jumped into the night and stayed close to the marching body of undead. This was the capital. There were plenty of enemies here that could deal with a vampire if they were careless. Thus everyone was ordered to stay in groups of four or more.
“Are you going to transform again?”
“No. I would like to just to practice, but with this many mortals around I fear that my gluttony would go overboard.
“How about your other form?” she asked. “It would still be transformation practice.”
“You have a good point.” I had used my phoenix form a few times, but almost always during highly emotional moments. This battle wouldn’t be that high pressured since there weren’t any enemies here that I wanted to tear limb from limb. “Alright. I’ll use my phoenix form.”
“Then I shall accompany you!” Jade declared as her body started to shift. A few bone chrunching moments later, a large monster known as a Roc stood next to me.
“When did you learn to transform?” I asked looking her form over. Rocs were pretty high on the monster hierarchy, especially among monsters that could fly. They possessed potent magic that they used to sunder their prey into pieces before they even left the skies.
“My lady forgets, but I am the highest level of all the Familia. Plus, you made me an Advanced Vampire,” Jade sent via telepathy.
“Good. I hope you can keep up!” Black flames washed around me as my form grew several times larger. I soon towered over Jade’s Roc form. I felt a twinge of pain in my head as I grew angry, but I managed to hold it off and calm down. Looks like what we thought might be the truth, my sins were somehow linked to my vampire forms.
Stretching my wings to their full lengths, I yelled a battle cry which came out as a loud caw that echoed over the battleground. I took to the air with only a few flaps, found myself over the burning, battle engrossed city. The air burning around me with each flap.
Casting my gaze around, I found pockets of defenders that were holding out against the undead. With a surge of mana, I bolt of black flame or lightning would rain down and turn the defenders to ash. The mortals tried to retaliate as arrows and spells came flying at me, but most burned up before they hit me. I easily dodged the spells.
A large explosion created a crater that was several hundred meters wide. I turned to make sure it wasn’t a threat and saw Oberon’s undead the Calamity Icon standing in the center of the crater. She wielded a large sword that appeared to have the faces of devils inside it. Each swipe of her weapon caused more than a little destruction.
I ignored her and turned to continue raining fire down on the city. While people were dying by the hundreds, they were starting to get organized as domes of power were forming all over the cities. As a capital, there was church for most of the gods dotting the city. Even if one or two of them were taken out during Oberon’s initial assault there were still a dozen more that could muster a response to the undead.
Flying over one of those domes, resulted in a few dozen spears made from light striking all around me. I was nearly hit by one when a layer of ice formed to block it. I nodded my appreciation to Jade and returned the favor. I was flying a good distance above the city, meaning the priests had to be a fairly high level to target me. I made sure to increase the power of my spells to try and make an impact against the barrier, but they were thick.
A small figure flew through the air and struck the barrier causing cracks to form before it broke to pieces. I zoomed my vision and saw that it was Helena was a thick aura covering her. It was almost like a living shadow that wanted to consume all the light around her. The people that were inside the barrier were being turned into sandbags as she charged from person to person, using her shield as a battering ram.
I looked back to Jade and sent her, “We can’t fall behind!”
Banking, we moved around the city trying to cause as much damage as possible. I used flame and ice to turn entire streets into hell as people froze next to people that were burning. Jade and I had reduced a good portion of the remaining city into rubble. We might have been a bit drunk on our power as a blast of magical energy tore through the sky between us, burning part of one of Jade’s wings.
I swung around and drove, managing to catch her just as another blast of energy smacked into me. My flaming feathers managed to repel most of the force, but it still knocked me about. I adjusted my talons, so as not to cut Jade, and flew toward a section of the city that had already been taken by the undead.
