Chapter 14
Alessa
I leaned back licking my lips once Husskan was drained of blood. He had a very strong flavor. Something that reminded me of the mountains. I wanted nothing more than to crush his windpipe and be down with him, but that would be a waste. No, I wanted him to work for me for the rest of eternity. Maybe longer.
Someone of his strength converted to a vampire would be quite the weapon. The same with Deldrach, I could only imagine the speed he could reach after being changed. The only regret was the loss of level, but I found and Helena had confirmed that the higher the level when the change happen the stronger the vampire.
I sniffed the air and found the still burning body of Deldrach. He was twitching and completely unconscious from the pain of the poison. I would need to see if I could create that in my normal form. Making ice gauntlets out of it would be quite the threat.
“You’re turn,” I said kneeling and pulling his body toward me. His eyes snapped open and he rammed a dagger into my stomach. I hissed as pain flared through from the spot, but my vampire body soon got over it. I flashed my fangs as his eyes widened. “Should have gone for the heart.” Not that that would kill me.
I pulled the dagger out and then with no small amount of glee, I bit down on his neck and enjoyed the new screams that issued from him. Once I had drained him of all his blood, I gave him a drop of mine then dropped him back to the ground. Husskan was still recovering from his transformation but the fight wasn’t over.
I looked up as Helena was finishing off her three targets. They must have gone after her since she was the smallest, too bad for them. I did notice they were all still alive, though heavily wounded. Either she wanted to save them for later, or it was some form of torture. Knowing her, likely both.
I turned to look at the other group. It was almost sad to watch. Oberon was toying with them. A circle of undead kept the four from fleeing, while he used small spells to torment them. The woman, Rachel, was trying to stab him, but Oberon used Promise and Delha to parry the blows with ease.
“They were decently high level, but not what I was expecting. I guess I shouldn’t have expected too much from a small lordship like Kalia,” Helena said as she moved over to me.
“Why’d you leave the ones you were dealing with alive?” I asked looking over to her pile.
“They’re for Oberon. I’m sure he’ll want to test his necromantic magic on higher level individuals.”
“Oh! I didn’t think about that. Well, I’m sure he won’t mind me having two of them.”
“Compared to my prey, yours actually looked challenging. Congratulations of your second form, by the way. I was quite impressed. It appears you have a tendency toward large monster forms.”
“Thanks.”
Oberon stabbed Delha through one of the mages with Rachel and left him impaled to the wall behind him. He then turned back to the woman and grinned. “Want to surrender?”
“This isn’t possible! We’re the Crimson League! How could we be defeated by some undead from the middle of nowhere,” she cried though her rapier was trembling.
“Nowhere?” Oberon asked with a laugh then shook his head. “A thousand years ago, that desert was a landscape unlike anything you’d likely ever seen. Haven inspired poets and artists alike. Calling it nowhere is a mockery to its memory.”
“What nonsense are you babbling about?!” Rachel demanded with outrage. Oberon did have a tendency to ramble about things from the past now that his memories were a bit more solid. Helena and I tried to just ignore it for the most part.
“I told you my name already. Are you an idiot or has name been forgotten more than I was told?” Oberon asked tapping Promise of his shoulder.
Rachel dropped her gaze to the ground and started to ramble. “No. I can’t believe. A nightmare. That’s right! This must be a nightmare. Otherwise, there was no way that I could lose. Not me. I am Rachel Moro. The best adventurer in the world.” It looked like she was broken.
“Careful,” Helena said taking a step back.
“What is it?” I asked looking around for another threat that I might have missed.
“I recognize that sort of talk. Its…” Before she could finish there was an explosion of mana from Rachel. The outpour wasn’t controlled or organized in any way thus it wasn’t a spell. She dropped to her knees and screamed causing all the windows on the street to shatter. Her body began to bulge grotesquely. “Fuck! Oberon! One of her sins maxed out! She changing!”
“Fascinating.” Was all he said before another explosion rocked the street, sending dust and debris into the air.
Oberon
I reached over and tore Delha from the impaled man as the dust raged around me. Even as she transformed, I never lost sight of her with my life sight. Her life force was surging making her a beacon that I could spot from several kilometers away with its brightness. Though with how much of her life force she was burning, this creature wouldn’t live very long.
I whispered a few defensive spells just to be on the safe side. Helena had been worried and that was saying something. She wasn’t the most powerful creature I’d met since returning, but she knew what was and wasn’t a threat. If she was being cautious, then I should take that into consideration.
A clawed fist roughly the size of my head appeared and cracked against my barrier. Blood sprayed from the wounded hand as the creature roared blowing away all the dust. It jumped back, holding its hand in obvious pain though it was healing before my eyes.
Rachel had completely changed into a monster of some sort. Even with my adventuring and magical knowledge, I didn’t recognize it. The closest relative would be the demon race, as her body had enlarged while being armored in red scales with two leathery wings on her back. Claws, horns, and fangs were aplenty all over the creature. Flames leapt off her body in various places as well. Given they were almost white, they were considerably high level.
“Again, you disappoint me. I thought you were proud of your body. What is this?” I asked gesturing with Delha. “Surely this isn’t the image of strength in your mind?”
Rachel roared but didn’t say anything. She must have lost her rationale. Ted did mention that as your sin gauge reached near max, it was like the world was slipping away from you. I was putting off taking the sins from Alessa and Helena since they were high level creatures, but even if there was some risk, I should consider going ahead and removing it from them. Alessa in particular was having trouble controlling her rage in her vampire form.
While I was thinking about other things, Rachel had recovered and was bringing her cupped fists down on my barrier. She managed to force me down nearly half a meter with her first blow. “Yes. Yes. I’ll pay attention.” I brought Promise around, aiming for her wrist and while her armor would have stopped most blades, Promise was one of the top ten blades in the world. His edge sliced cleanly through the armored scales causing blood to flash over the cobblestone street. Where the drops landed, a flame started melting the ground.
Rachel spun around and a tail appeared cracking on the side of my barrier. The blow managed to lift me up and send me through the building next to us. I had to admit, if I wasn’t connected to the Lay-line right now, this might actually be harder than it was. Had to make sure Maya was able to connect to the Lay-line outside the city. That little girl was quickly becoming a key part of my future plans.
“Of course, I need to finish my business here up,” I commented rolling to the side as Rachel came down with her claws foot. I smacked the ground and got up, bringing my foot around in the process to kick her in the side. I frowned when she barely moved. Sighing, I concentrated on the heel of my foot and channeled a force blow spell. This time, she was sent flying through the other side of the building into the one next to it.
Walking through the debris, I found her shaking her head as she was getting up. She lunged at me and wrapped her arms around my barrier before she started to squeeze. When my barrier actually cracked, I almost wanted to be impressed with her physical strength. The heat was almost reaching levels that mortals would have trouble dealing with.
“While I usually don’t turn down the embrace of beautiful women, you’ve really let yourself go,” I said quickly adjusting my grip on Promise. With an upward slice, I made a large gash across her chest as I forced her arms apart by expanding my barrier momentarily. The blade almost leeched a considerable amount of her mana. This time the wound wouldn’t heal quickly.
She dropped to her knees in pain. Even if the form had lost all of its intelligence, it could still hurt. I returned Delha to my sub-dimension then moved in front of the creature. I flexed my hand before I stabbed it in where her heart should be. Rachel thrashed and roared but was unable to throw me off.
“Much easier when the person isn’t channeling holy magic the entire time,” I said with a snicker before I started chanting. I had improved a lot since I made the Wraith. I was hoping for something close to Xeria the Calamity Icon but didn’t get my hopes to high. Rachel was still a mortal, even if she had changed into some sort of rage fueled monster.
While for the most part the necromancy magic will do all the work when transforming a creature into an undead, that wasn’t what allowed me to be the best in the world. With care, I chanted and concentrated on building the spell that would change Rachel into undead. I was sure it would be my best undead yet, with the exception of Xeria.
I consumed Rachel’s life force dwindled until it vanished. The large body stopped moving completely until I finished building the magic that would reanimate the woman. Parts of the scales fell away once her life had been consumed returning her a bit to her mortal form. That wasn’t my doing, but rather the undoing of whatever system the sin curse magic worked under. You’d think since I created it, I would have a bit more control over it but alas, that wasn’t the case.
Finally, I pulled my hand free as the magic was finished. Rachel’s eyes opened with a white green flame pouring out of them. She stood and flexed her hands before kneeling before me. “Master. I am at your service,” she said. Other than sounding more servile, her voice wasn’t that different from a normal mortal’s.
“Very good. I’m glad I was able to make sure your voice didn’t decay.”
“Thank you for your hard work,” she replied not looking up.
“Another one?” Helena said as her and Alessa moved over to me.
“What do you mean?”
“You like your women, is what I mean. You even changed her mostly back to her real form,” she answered crossing her arms.
“That wasn’t me. Besides, I don’t like to waste talent,” I said patting the top of Rachel’s head. I checked her status and found she was an undead called a Hope Stalker. Never heard of it before, but her level was twice mine at three hundred. I was proud for finally hitting hundred and fifty after taking the city.

Checking my status, I spotted a new boon. The system didn’t tell me what it related to, but since it was under boon, it should be a good thing. I grinned before I took in the other adventurers that were still alive. “Let’s see if I can get lucky again.”
I ordered Rachel to bring me her companions and enjoyed the horror on their faces. I also sent for the bodies outside the wall. They had lost quite a bit of their potency after being dead for almost an hour, but they should make decent undead. I should also put a few in stasis for Ted to practice with. Never hurt to spread the benefits.
