Izora
“We should be able to move in a few hours.”
“Understood. Queen Louella has won a decisive victory against a Thonacan fleet. She advises us to beware any airships that might still be operational.”
“Funny how things we once created are being used for war,” Hatsu commented as I dismissed the officer.
“As is the way of war. It can turn anything into a weapon. Though, the airships were always built with a potential war in mind. If not for the revolt, we would have had a fleet seven times this size.”
“Lord Regan did reduce most of them to ash, and the ones he didn’t dispose of were caught up in the fight between the two cores in the north.”
I was glad that Louella didn’t need our assistance. I would have hated that she met a force that she could have beaten but failed due to us not being there. Now there was only the capital to deal with. Sadly, I doubt that would bring this war to an end. With the Lelune Theocracy still a formidable power to the south, our fight will just shift in direction.
There were dozens of cities, not to mention their capital of Port Hope was in Lecazar. We would either have to cross the mountains to the south or take the trip back north and go through either Vaihdetta or the central pass. Either way, it added some time to our travel.
While I considered the issue, I felt a surge of energy from what felt like my soul. I doubled over and vomited despite myself. I could tell Hatsu was talking to me, but I couldn’t hear anything due to the ringing. There was so much mana that it was trying to tear my body apart.
Unable to stop, my fingers were soon bloodied from scratching them over the metal surface of the floor. I had to do something, or I might literally explode. The pain radiating through my body was making it hard to concentrate. I did the only thing I could think of, I directed all the mana into my pool as if I was cultivating.
The pain dropped to an almost manageable level, but the empty space in my veins only served to beckon more mana into my body. I had a bigger pool than most people and it was filling up in seconds. Something I had never heard of happening before. I lost control and ended up slamming my head into the ground.
Through slitted eyes, I managed to notice that everyone was keeping their distance from me. Everyone but Hatsu that was. As I watched her skin started to turn red, but she refused to release me. That’s when I realized I was putting off enough heat to boil water. I felt like I might reach my limit at any second.
Gritting my teeth, I tried to push her away. “Get… back!” I gasped.
She screamed something, but I still couldn’t hear anything. I wasn’t sure how long the intense flood of mana lasted, but I managed to hold it back from causing my body to explode. Mainly through sheer will not to let Hatsu suffer from being near me. The mana wave did finally recede like the tide. I dropped to the ground as blackness washed over me.
“Hatsu!” I couldn’t help shouting as I woke up. I twisted around trying to find her and spotted her wrapped from head to toe in bandages. I crawled out of the bed I was in, falling to the ground but still I dragged myself to her bed and moved to cup her face. I carefully peeked under her bandages and found she looked like she had been in the sun for several days without shade. That was the best looking, in other places it looked like she’d stood in an open fire.
“Lady Izora! You’re awake!” Sasori said with a relieved tone.
“Yes. How long was I out?”
“Nearly a day.”
“How… How is she?” I asked looking at Hatsu.
“In rough condition. Mana poisoning along with intense burns. She’ll live if she can make it through the next few hours.”
“This is my fault…” I moaned unable to hold back my tears.
“Actually, it’s mine.” I looked up to see Lord Regan standing in the entrance.
“Lord Regan!” I glanced down and only saw bandages and a nightgown. This wasn’t how you greeted your lord, but that didn’t matter. “Can you save her!?” I pleaded. Hatsu had basically saved me when I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep living. I couldn’t afford to lose her.
“Let me see.” He moved over and placed a hand over her. Moving his hand up and down, he let out a sigh as he pulled it away. “I can repair quite a bit of the damage, but… her mana pool is damaged. It will take… a long time to heal.”
“How long?!”
“I can’t say. I haven’t seen many wounds like this. She is, quite frankly, lucky to be alive.”
“She won’t suffer or anything right?”
“No, but it might be hard psychologically,” Lord Regan said with a hard expression.
“I’ll support her!”
“That will likely be a saving grace for her. Alright.” He held both hands over Hatsu and a rainbow of light washed over her. I could see her skin healing as we watched. Physical damage was easy, but the mana pool was thought to be a crossroads of sorts. It connected the body with the soul and the mind.
It took Lord Regan nearly a full hour to heal all the damage to Hatsu’s body. The grief that I was the one that caused this welled up again. “I told you I was the one at fault,” Lord Regan said as if reading my mind. Which since we were connected was possible.
“Puppet brought several hundred thousand high race individuals into my dungeon. I directed the mana to flow to all my connections which inadvertently meant you as well. I caught it quickly, but not before the damage was done. I am quite amazed you didn’t out right explode.
“I did my best to contain it for Hatsu who refused to leave me.”
“I see. I will formally apologize to the girl when she wakes up. I am glad that both of you are alright. When you are in a better condition and miss Hatsu awakens, I would like you show you something.”
“I understand. I will let you know.” I bowed my head. Even if he said it was his fault, I really couldn’t believe that. I was sure that he was saying it to make me feel less guilty. I would need to work harder and get stronger.
Lord Regan turned to leave but stopped when he reached the door to look back. “Also, congratulations on reaching tier four.”
