Chapter 4
Alessa
Two days passed while we hunted the villages. The first one was only a small hamlet of about a hundred people. There wasn’t even a decent fighter thus it was destroyed before the moon reached its peak for the night. After I transformed all the corpses into undead, we burned the village to the ground leaving no trace of our presence.
I stood back while my Familia massacred the village. The screams of the helpless echoing through the night. I thought I might feel something for the deaths of people so weak, but my vampire heart didn’t so much as twitch. I was already thinking about the next place we needed to destroy.
To the north of the crossroads, the next village was a bit larger coming in at around a thousand people. There was even a true night watch that patrolled the wooden walls around the town. My Familia scouted for an hour just to be on the safe side. Even then, we found the average level of the town to be almost twenty. Nothing for my group to fear.
I gestured to Jade. She began the attack by sending her enchanted arrows into the city sealing off the gates. Their walls would be their own downfall. The alarm went up from the town guards, but my girls were already moving through the shadows. Mortals might not be able to see it, but for me the streams of blood spraying into the air were like works of art.
A general level of noise went up from the village as people ran in terror. Screams and yelling from the men and women that weren’t sure what was going on and were trying to get information in any way possible. Maybe it was Oberon’s influence or my own madness, but the noise sounded like music to me.
I raised my open palm and chanted. Fireballs started to rain down on the village. They lacked Oberon’s overwhelming power, but would serve to add more confusion to the scene. Explosions soon rang out in the night as my spells struck the wooden buildings. After that, the fires began eating away at the still intact parts of town.
“My lady,” Jade said grabbing my attention.
“What is it?”
“A resistance is forming around the church. The priest is stronger than we anticipated.”
I placed a gauntleted hand over my mouth as I yawned. “Take care of him.”
Jade nodded and moved to the edge of the cliff. Mana started to fluctuate around her as she pulled an arrow back on the bowstring. She was a talented magic archer. She absorbed Oberon’s magic lessons even better than me, not that I let her know that. After about thirty seconds of channeling her mana, she released the arrow.
I followed the projectile as it arced towards the only building still undamaged in the town. A small, paper thin barrier sparked around it. I could see a small gathering of people flooding into the area of the church. Jade’s ice blue arrow flew straight and true, as it easily punctured the barrier and flew into the open doors of the building.
With enough force that I felt it all the way outside of town, the building exploded into a mess of jagged icicles and spikes. The priest must have been hit because the barrier instantly vanished as the area was torn apart by the spell. Blurred shadows rushed in as my vampires moved and fountains of blood soon coated the ice.
I patted Jade’s shoulder. “Well done.” I glanced back at the town, but it was finished with that last attack. “Clean up the area. Make sure no one escaped. I’m going to make sure we didn’t miss anything.” I jumped into the sky transforming into my azure phoenix form and taking to the air.
The transformation used more mana than it was worth, but according to Helena practice made perfect. I needed to use the form more to better understand it. That way it would cost less mana since the mana wouldn’t be used to compensate my knowledge of it.
Flying through the air, I used my life sight to make sure no one was outside the walls during the attack. Hunters or adventurers that might be returning late. We had waited close to midnight, but you never know what might happen during a quest or while tracking a prey.
My search yielded nothing after I expanded my circle over five kilometers. Other than beasts and a few low-level monsters, I found nothing. Banking, I turned back to the village since the fifteen-minute flight had already put me under half my mana. That said, I felt it get easier to move in this form every minute.
When I returned to the village, nothing but ash remained. The members of my Familia that were able to use magic had already burned it to the ground. Landing near where a pile of bodies lay, I found the rest of my Familia waiting for me. With whirling of shadows, I transformed back to my normal form.
“Everything of value has been loaded into the space bag from Master Oberon. We are just waiting your command.”
“Good.” I checked my mana, I wouldn’t have enough to transform all these corpses into undead in one go. I motioned for one of my Familia. She blushed but moved over. I found out something that I’m not sure even Helena knew, more by accident really. The girl offered her neck as I grabbed her waist. Licking my lips, I bit down and started drinking. My mana started surge until it was brimming over the top. I released her well before she was dry. “It tastes even better today.”
“Thank… Thank you, my lady,” she said breathlessly as she backed away. When I bite them, it apparently is very pleasurable. Sort of like the mortals only amplified ten times over. The only conclusion was that I was able to pull mana from them due to my Bottomless Pit boon, but I couldn’t be sure. No one knew anything about it after all.
I held my hands out and chanted the necromantic spells to raise the bodies. I put my mind of auto and checked my status since the spells took several long minutes. Especially for this many bodies. Once they were reformed they would rejoin the undead Oberon sent along with us.

“Do you have any spells to reduce the sunlight?” Helena asked from where she huddled under her parasol. The army was marching toward its next target. A township of close to fifteen thousand strong. The largest target on our path to the capital. There were a few towns to the north and south that came close, but I was opting for a direct path.
“It is not that I don’t, but they are incredibly mana intensive. There are quite a few gods and goddesses that like for the sun to touch the earth. Just be content with the bare minimum that Siateth is providing.”
“Since when did you care about what the deities think?”
“What they think, no. No. I care about the fact that any one of them can wipe us off the face of the planet if they were able. Taking away the sun without properly directing their anger usually makes it easier for them to smite evil as it were. By having Siateth be our guardian deity, all their anger has to be directed at him.”
“When you say it like that, I suppose I shall suffer in silence.”
“Please do.” I got a snort, but she moved off, disappearing into the shadows under the trees. I stared after her but just shook my head. The sound of leather flapping drew my attention to a shadow that was descending from the sky. “Irgire! How is my grandson on this fine afternoon?” I asked as I created a skeleton mount for him to ride.
“You know, I don’t think I will ever get used to that,” he said with a grumble.
“You’d be just like your father if you didn’t,” I replied with a laugh. “And? How are the rear lines treating Ted?”
“Theodore is having the time of his life. He hopes that you go after the Fiden Lordship soon.”
I smirked. Fiden was the territory that he was accused of rape and murder of a noble woman. The kicker was that it was his own friend that had sown the seeds of treachery against him that not only caused his entire family to be killed for quote, unquote justice, but almost ended up with his own head on the chopping block. “Tell him not to worry. No more than six months and all of the west will burn.”
Irgire nodded. “On a more personal note, when do you plan on taking the Eye of the World?”
I would have raised an eyebrow if I had one. The Eye of the World and the barrier mountains that surrounded it were in the center of the ocean between the Igerox and Aitos Continent. Not only were there treacherous seas, but the barrier mountains were home to the dragon clans. It was no simple matter to walk into the area.
“In time. I’m not sure how the dragons were affected by the World Shift.” The last thing I wanted to do was antagonize the few beings that might be able to fight me without issue. Even when I was at the height of my power before, dragons were one of the few beings that I had to be careful around.
“Fair enough. Where should we go to get this information?”
“That is a good question. One that I plan on answering when I take over the capital of the Kalia Lordship.”
Even if the royal family of the Kalia lordship didn’t know anything, I was sure the mage tower of the city would. It would be futile to try and hide anything from me in a place like that. Magic might as well be my middle name.
We reached the crossroad just at sunset meeting up with Alessa’s newly formed undead. They fell into rank as my undead bullied them into the lines. Though, I could see some growth in Alessa as her undead snapped and fought back. I was glad to see it. I didn’t need undead that were pushovers and neither did she.
I closed my eyes and concentrated on the girl. Alessa’s image appeared next to me after a moment. “Alessa. How goes the hunting?”
“We destroyed two villages in the vicinity. I left most of the undead waiting for you and moved on as per our plan.”
“How far ahead are you?”
“About a day. Maybe more.” She rubbed her head with a small laugh. “Distance is losing it’s meaning the longer I’m a vampire.”
I chuckled shaking my head. “Well, don’t fall too out of touch with the world or you’ll end up like those lazy bags back in Hizon.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. We have three villages in our sights. They should be crushed before you reach us tomorrow.”
“I look forward to it.” I paused tapping my chin. “Make sure you use the undead I sent with you next time. None of their levels went up.”
“Sorry! I was thinking about my Familia first,” Alessa waved her hand in front of her in a ‘don’t be mad’ sort of gesture.
“That’s fine. Just give them some action this time.”
“Will do.” I closed my hand and the communication vanished. I gestured forcing my army to move quicker. I had appointments to keep.
