Chapter 2

Off the Aitos Continent North coast

“Keep the wind in the sails! We can outrun those bloody pirates with the wind on our side!” Captain Deus shouted at the deck crew. He glanced back to see seven ships sporting the Pirate Queen Jupiter’s colors. He didn’t expect them to be this close to the border mountains of the eye of the world but sometimes luck wasn’t with you.

Captain Dues spun the helm to keep the sail full. Sweat poured down his and the rest of the crews’ face. He managed to turn it just in time as several cannon balls sailed passed. The water exploded out making it rain on the deck.

“Captain! They’re managing to gain on us!”

“You don’t think I can’t see that!?” He shouted back at his first mate. The ship rocked from an impact that struck the starboard side. Screams of pain came from the lower deck. “Seal that breach!”

There was a flash of light then the day darkened considerably. There was a rush of air that slammed into the ship throwing everyone to the ground. Captain Deus grabbed the rail as he pulled himself up. “What the fuck was that?”

He turned to look as saw three of the pirate ships sinking while partially in flames. They’d been cleanly sliced in half. He could just barely make out people in the water.

“Captain!” a sailor shouted pointing towards the distance. Captain Deus turned to see an island of land floating several hundred meters in the air. As he watched a beam of mana fired from the island and turned another two pirate ships to floating tinder.

“What… What… What is that thing doing out here!?” Captain Deus shouted falling back to the deck.

The pirate ships turned and tired to sail away but they were no match for the range of the weapons on the island. Three more beams of energy fired instantly turning the remainder of the ships to driftwood. Their own ship had been carried a good distance with the wind, but Captain Deus worried that it wasn’t far enough.

A beam of energy fired directly towards them. Whether it was the Goddess of Fate or another act of nature that couldn’t be explained, but the beam struck just behind the ship vaporizing the water. The resulting explosion propelled the ship several hundred meters in the span of a few seconds.

Everyone of the ship braced themselves for another attack, but it never came. The island passed the area and was nearly out sight before they could make out any more details. Everyone breathed a breath of relief until they saw another explosion in the distance.

“What was the Golden Fortress doing out here!? It hasn’t changed course in nine hundred years!” The first mate said slamming his fist on the railing.

“We need to report this as soon as possible. I doubt they don’t already know but I want to make sure this is known,” Captain Dues said. “Set course of the nearest safe port!”

Just as he gave the order, the main mast cracked and fell to the side. Captain Deus took a deep breath. “After we make repairs.”

~~~
“What could this mean!? The Golden Fortress hasn’t changed course in over nine hundred years. That thing has forced us to change how we developed our countries with its ridiculous amount of firepower!” an elderly man shouted slamming his staff on the ground hard enough to crack the marble under him.
A gathering of the representatives from all the countries on the Aitos Continent. That was how important this matter was. Everyone managed to put aside their petty differences for the moment.
“King Grindwol. I understand but look at it this way. It has been reported heading for the Igerox continent. This might mean a change in the wind for our continent. With that dreadful thing out of our skies, we will have much more land to develop. All this fighting might come to an end for a while.” A young woman that appeared to glow said from a throne made of steel.
“Your Highness, Clarinda. I certainly am inclined to agree with you there, but it might be heading to the Igerox continent for now, but what if it returns. Or worse, the Iron Maiden makes its way over here! Compared to that thing, I would prefer the Golden Fortress!”
“Do we have any news on the Iron Maiden?” A man in his forties, but with a well built body asked. The other two looked at him while trying to hide the contempt in their faces. Of the three countries on the Aitos Continent, two were human. The other and current ruler of over half of the land was predominantly beast kin. The man had two antlers that were easily wicked enough to skewer someone.
“Hucir… No. We don’t how about you?” Grindwold asked with a snort.
“How do you expect us to have any information? Given that your fleets keep us locked to the land,” Hucir said sliding his nail along one of his antlers.
“Animals should remain in the fields where they belong,” Clarinda said covering her mouth with a fan.
“Huh!? How about you say that a bit louder you bitch!” Hucir shouted shattering the arm of his chair in his hand.
The nearly hundred guards surrounding the room from each of the fractions rushed forward weapons bared at each other. The beast kin issued growls and roars as if daring them to try it.
“Enough!” An older woman shouted releasing a wave of power. She was a beastkin but it was hard to tell what animal race was represented. The three rulers turned to her, Hucir with much more respect than the other two. “The only thing that can effect those monsters is Oberon.”
The three rulers jerked when she said his name without any issue. The World’s Curse was not something to take lightly.
“Lady Caller. Please lend us your wisdom on this matter,” Hucir asked with a bow.
“As I said, there is only one thing that can control those things. After a thousand years, we have only managed to destroy two of the four he built. Thanks to the hero, they only got stronger over the centuries. If one of the Family managed to gain access to whatever controlled them in the past. Well… I don’t think you need me to say much more,” Lady Caller said then took a draw from a pipe.
“Send a message to our contacts in Aitos! They have to know something is going on!” Grindwold ordered.
“Sire. According to our contacts, Aitos is very… unstable at the moment. War on a scale that hasn’t been seen in a century draws closer every day.”
“I don’t care. Do it!”
“Yes!”
~Several thousand kilometers to the north~
“Mistress, you called?”
“Ropa. Turn the island to the south. We’re heading home,” The mistress of the Iron Maiden said running her tongue over her blade like fingers.
“Home… Mistress?” Ropa asked. The imp had only known the floating island as his home.
“The Master is back. He’s back!” the Mistress shouted before she broke into a madden laughter.
Ropa fell back having never seen his mistress acting like this before. “Right away!” He ran out of the room.
“Master…”
A few minutes later, an island large enough to be called a country in its own right descended from the clouds. Completely frozen over from the artic environment, it blended into the surroundings. One of the deadliest weapons ever created by Oberon DarkPhoenix, was moving for the first time in four centuries.
