Chapter 36
Oberon
We all sat on the wagon outside of Frinz. As the capital city of a Lordship, we oculdn’t just waltz in without being searched by the gate guards. There was a steady stream of people in and out of the city even at this late hour of the day. The vampires of the party all huddled under the tarp of the wagon trying to avoid the last rays of sunlight.
“I miss my teleport magic,” I said with a groan.
“You know teleport magic!?” Ted asked with wide eyes.
“Yeah. Just can’t use it for gods know how long,” I said with another groan. I really hated this leveling system. I could have conquered half the continent already if I had full access to all my magic. I stopped thinking about that before I made myself even more upset. “So. How do we get in?” I turned to Helena. “Do you know if they check for vampires or undead?”
“They have a magic sentinel that checks for everything. At least at the main gate. Its pretty easy to move around once you get inside. It requires a large amount of magic to operate,” Helena explained.
“Sentinel?” I asked something stirring at the back of my mind. “Do you happen to know when they were made?”
“Back in… your time,” Helena said. “No… No! I don’t believe it.” She shook her head vigorously as if she refused to accept it.
“I didn’t even say anything,” I said with a chuckle.
“No. I remember. Oberon made the Sentinels. Most were torn down, but the few that remain are still functional even to this day. Does that mean you can control them?”
“I don’t know. Maybe,” I said with a shrug.
“So. Interesting fact, but not every useful,” Alessa said from the back.
“Pretty much. Something to look into once we actually got into the city,” I said making a mental note of it. I also tried to conjure up any memories about things I might have left around the continent. Unfortunately, nothing came to the surface with me trying to force it. I thought about the upgrade option I saw the other day. Maybe if I selected Mind, I might have a boost to my dusty skull.
“Scale the wall in the middle of the night. I can distract the guards for a few moments while you do so,” Helena said pointing to a far-off section of the wall.
“You? Distract the guards?” I asked trying to contain my laughter.
“I’ll have you know that are quite a few perverts that like them young,” Helena said folding her arms across her chest.
“Oh, I have no doubt of that,” I said unable to hold back anymore. I burst out laughing at the thought of her trying to seduce someone. It was our only plan for the moment, though. We had no choice to go with it. At least, if we didn’t want to fight our way in. “Fine. We’ll go ahead with this plan. How are you going to get in? Surely, there are wards above the wall to prevent flying?”
“Don’t worry, I got this.” She pulled out a badge of some type. It didn’t look like any of the few travel badges I’d seen being carried by the few people we’d actually interacted with during the trip. It was emblazoned with gold and a strong magical aura was being emitted from it. There was an emblem of a dragon in the center. “A pass that allows me access to any city in the country. You live long enough you can get a few handy trinkets over the years. There are plenty of people willing to handout goodies for power,” she said with a smug grin.
“I don’t need to hear about your hay rolls from over the years,” I said trying to annoy her. Something about her trying to showoff just made me want to mess with her.
“At least I can still roll in the hay,” Helena said glancing down to my waist.
“Ha. Ha. At least I don’t have to find a pervert to get any,” I said.
“Just corpses. Bloody necropliac,” Helena said fading into shadow. Damn it. I mentally made a note to find a way to stop her from doing that in the future. I threw a rude gesture off into the night.
“We should probably head to the section of the wall or we might miss our chance,” Alessa said.
“What should we do with the idiots?” Ted asked pointing into the wagon with the three adventurers were still sleeping off their alcoholically binge from the other night.
“Just let them guard the wagon. There is enough food and water to last a few days. I have a feeling we won’t be here for long,” I said.
Alessa told them their orders. After that we made our way towards the spot on the wall while keeping to the forest. We weren’t the only ones, as there were dozens of camp sites along the forest line. Every now and then we could see someone leaning against a tree or sitting outside their campsite, most likely keeping watch.
We came to the spot Helena pointed to back from the road. Looking up to the wall, we could still see the guards patrolling the wall. I was impressed with the serious they were exhibiting. Something caught their attention and they rushed to the tower a few dozen meters from where they were walking. A few seconds went by as we waited.
“I see her, she’s waving to us,” Alessa said.
“How the vampires haven’t conquered the continent, I still don’t understand,” I said with a laugh.
“Probably something to do with the fact most of them can’t go out in the sun,” Alessa said with a hand on her hip.
“True,” I said. I turned to the wall and summoned a globe of darkness around the area we would be climbing. Next, I created a dozen icicles and impaled them up the wall. With a jump, I started climbing the wall.
Alessa
We climbed the wall quickly. Ted had some trouble, he wasn’t able to see in the dark. We all managed to get up the wall though. I looked to the tower and saw the two men staring off into the distance with blissful expressions. One even had some drool coming from his mouth.
“Teach me!” I said grabbing her hand.
“Later. I think you might abuse it too much,” Helena said with a smirk.
“Let’s find an inn to stay at while we gather some information on where your mother is kept at. I have a feeling someone like that is kept on display since she is a trophy,” Oberon said.
We managed to get off the wall easy enough. Everyone in our path appeared to be suffering the same effects of whatever Helena did to them. Saruis was surprisingly quiet during the whole trip. In fact, I don’t remember him speaking since the camp. He appeared to be tagging along with everything we did, no questions asked.
We asked around and headed towards the slums. We didn’t go all the way into to them, more just on the outskirts of it. Inns there would less likely to ask questions. I was happy as long as they had a bed I could sleep on. I was pretty sure the seedy place we chose had a dead body in front of it. Oberon said we’d fit right it.
“How do we do this? Vampires in one room or by gender?” Ted asked.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll meet you here later,” Helena said before she vanished.
“Damn it, she really likes doing that,” I said staring off after her.
We decided on vampires and necromancers for the rooms. The clientele of the establishment was a colorful bunch that clearly had dealings on the wrong side of the law. More than one person eyeballed mine and Oberon’s armor as we walked up to the stairs to the next room.
“Why don’t you and Saruis get some food. Make it look like more than one of us eats,” Oberon said.
“What about me?” I asked.
“While I don’t mind if you go, be prepared for a few people trying to… jump your bones tonight. You don’t just waltz a girl into a place like this without attracting attention.”
“Good point. I’ll head to my room,” I said following him up to the next floor. We’d barely made it up the next set of stairs when we heard shouting then a loud crash. Oberon paused then just shook his head as he kept moving down the hall looking for the room.
In the middle of the hall, a woman stood with barely any clothes on. As Oberon passed her, she reached out to grab his arm. “Hey. How about you spend your night with me? I’d be much softer than that girl,” she said with a sultry voice.
Oberon glanced back at me. “I might take you up on that. But not tonight.”
“Your lose. Don’t worry,” She said purring as she leaned into Oberon. “I’ll be here all week.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” Oberon said then moved on.
“I don’t mind taking a ride on the other side for a night,” she said as I passed.
“I think I’ll be quite alright,” I said trying not to cringe away from her.
“Pity,” she said as she stared after us.
Ignoring the woman, we made it to our rooms. When we opened the door, needless to say we were not impressed. There were two beds, and a tiny table that was supposed to serve as a desk. There was nowhere to store our gear, other than the floor.
“Camping on the street might have been better. At least we could see the person that slits our throats coming,” Oberon said as he went into his room. He stuck his head back out. “No funny business with your new vampire toy.”
“Shut up,” I said then slammed the door as I entered my room. I glanced at it when it creaked in a way that I worried it was about to fall off its hinges. I walked over to the bed and fell into it. So much kept changing around me that I just wanted to shut the world out for a few hours.
An hour or so later, I heard the door open I lifted my head, since I wasn’t actually able to sleep anymore, and saw Saruis enter the room. There was blood covering his fist and he was lapping it up like a dog. “What did you do?” I asked though I was sure I knew the answer.
“An old acquaintance happened to be staying here. He wanted… words with me outside so I obliged. Don’t worry, if anyone asks, I have witnesses that will know it was all in self-defense.”
“Lovely.” I groaned and rolled over. “Rest for a bit. You’ll be stuck in here the rest of the day once the sun comes up.”
“Yes. My Lady,” Saruis said bowing.
