Revenge of the Sorcerer King 22

Hey guys! I hope the week is alright for everyone!

Chapter 22

Oberon POV~~~

We didn’t linger long in the town. Only a night. The servants still needed food and rest, so I let them take an inn room. Alessa also took one, while I watched the wagon. I quite enjoyed the night air and didn’t mind the task. While I laid on the wagon, I felt a saw a small aura of light working its way into the wagon.

Whispering the words to a spell, the little creature was swept up in a gust of wind. I reached out and grabbed it. A rat struggled to free itself. I smirked as I squeezed harder, then got an idea. Popping the creature’s neck, I ended its life instantly. I looked around to make sure there were no life signatures around me.

I knew the tracker was almost a hundred meters away, as I hadn’t let him out of my sight since they started following us. Shifting as if trying to get a better position on the seat, I moved the body of the rat out of view. I quickly whispered the chant for the necromantic spell to rise the creature back as an undead.

Once the rat twitched back to life, I tossed it into the alley nearby. Unseen, it scurried off towards the slums. I’d ordered it to wait for two days before it attacked anyone. I chuckled to myself at the thought of the chaos that would be spread when my present went off. I let the rest of the night pass as I watched the stars.

~~

We left the town with only our shadow. I let Jack sell off the monster parts at the guild, which earned us a hundred gold and some change coins. With that little deception done, I felt we’d earned ourselves a few weeks if not months. Kyla was executed without any issues.

The Frinz Lordship, where Alessa’s mother was kept as a slave was roughly a month from the border town of Guil. We had to keep up appearances for the tracker the Guildmaster put on us, so we had to travel during the day. I considered intentionally heading into a monster nest or something to draw them out, but if they were professional enough, they would be able to avoid it.

“To kill or not to kill, that is the question,” I muttered.

“Who we are killing?” Alessa asked from where she laid on wagon bench.

“The person following us. Even on the open road they are managing to not only keep pace but hide themselves from normal observation. I don’t see how a border town like this could have someone so skilled,” I explained.

“It’s a mystery huh,” Alessa said staring off into the distance.

“Something interesting?” I asked with a chuckle.

“This is the first time in – four years I have been able to travel and enjoy the view while doing so. I couldn’t travel by myself due to the monsters and when I was with a caravan, I had to watch my back every moment of the day,” Alessa said turning to look at me.

“I am sorry for your suffering. I am surprised my family fell so far though. Even without me there were several strong branches that could easily hold off a kingdom or two,” I said leaning back with my chin in my hand.

“I don’t know. Mother never had a chance to explain about the family before she was taken. She had tried to keep it a secret from me while I was younger. All I know is that we moved around a lot. I don’t know my father.”

“I could use magic to find out if there are any more of my descendants, but thanks to this stupid system I can’t use it. It is relatively high-level Advanced magic. It covers the entire world after all.”

“Is there a lower level version that just does, I don’t know a continent or something?” Alessa asked with a snort.

“Yes, but that still requires a decently high level in Basic and Advanced magic. Plus, it requires a drop of blood or item from the family that you’re trying to find. If I had blood I could do it to find everyone. I could have used your blood before you changed into a vampire but… anyway, I hope to borrow some of your mother’s.”

“Do you think there are more of us out there?” Alessa asked. I could almost feel the hope in her voice.

“Well. You and your mother survived out here. My human wife was of the weaker of the harem, no offense. Her family sold her to me when they saw I was on a rise to power, trying to get in my good graces. Back then I thought I was saving her by getting her away from her corrupt family,” I explained. The memories flowing in my head as if from a dusty book. I had to concentrate almost harder than some of the higher levels of magic required to remember clearly.

“I wonder what the world was like back then,” Alessa said dreamily.

“Well. Much the same as now, only you would be a princess,” I said with a laugh.

“A princess!” Alessa said excitedly. She turned back to the gap in the tarp and acquired a dreamy look.

“Do you want to be a princess?” I asked crossing my arms.

“What little girl doesn’t want to be a princess!? Mother took me to a parade for the princess of Loeriten when they came through the town, we stayed in. I still remember how much I wished to be the one in the carriage.”

I nodded to Alessa story. I had forced her to harden up a bit, but she was still only a fourteen-year-old girl that had lived a rough life. I felt she deserved more from life than to be treated like a prize to be captured. It would be interesting to see the looks on their faces when Alessa walked through the capital with an army marching behind her. I chuckled to myself at the sight then turned to look outside the wagon at the passing hillside.

Alessa POV~~

Thanks to Oberon, I daydreamed about beautiful dresses, royal dinners and handsome butlers for the rest of the afternoon. When we stopped for the night, Oberon went to hunt. I was honestly surprised that he wanted to do it, but he said he wanted to move his bones. That left me with my servants. They were ordered to act like they normally and not to talk about the city or us.

Jack was building a fire while Elizabeth and Dauz were setting up tents. They built one for me, but Oberon was going to keep watch, so he didn’t need one. I stared at Jack as he worked, or more accurately the vein pulsing in his neck. It had been four days since my last ‘meal’, and I was getting thirsty. I couldn’t do anything though thanks to the person trailing us.

I groaned in annoyance as I crawled into the tent. Once I dropped the flap, Vaunn popped her plates open and I crawled out. Laying on the mat, I enjoyed the freedom. I knew it was for my protection, but it was still constricting to wear armor from dawn until dusk.

“Thanks, Vaunn,” I said patting her knee. She had taken a cross legged position and while she was completely silent, I knew that she was likely listening for threats.

She nodded but remained silent. Oberon had ordered both Vaunn and Grodo not to speak unless it was a matter of life and death. He didn’t want to give a way our biggest advantage. Since I wouldn’t sleep anyways, I pulled up my status so I could decide what I wanted to practice tonight.

Name: Alessa Darkfeather

Age: 14

Race: Pureblood Vampire- “A little gift for the girl that let me one up that wench. I look forward to your achievements in the future.”

Level: 30

Sin: [Pride: 30%] [Greed: 5%] [Lust: 37%] [Envy: 3%] [Gluttony: 43%] [Wrath: 40%] [Sloth: 1%]

Curses: Ancestral Curse. Undying

Boons: One With The Darkness.

My level had stopped rising in the desert. Have pounding monsters for three days straight they were no longer a threat. I was able to kill them easily, whether I used magic, sword, or even my bare fist. I felt I was close to a reaching the next level on my various skills but would need a bit more work.

My sin list had finally changed. I nearly panicked when I first saw how high some of them were. Oberon reasoned that its likely due to my nature. Vampires are inherently lustful, gluttons for blood, and wrathful to anything that stands in their way. When he put it that way, I felt it made a lot of sense.

“I guess its basic magic tonight,” I said cracking my neck.

I concentrated on my mana pool and thought about a few simple spells that Oberon taught me. First just for the practice I cast an alarm spell over the tent. I doubted anything would get past Oberon, but it was good practice. Next, I played with lightning.

I formed a ball of it in one hand then tossed it back and forth. It was interesting, and required a decent amount of concentration to make sure it didn’t go berserk. I could feel my mana draining just from playing with it for a few minutes. That was another thing I had to do to train, burn mana.

Oberon said it was like a muscle. The more you used it the easier it became. Your pool was relatively set when you are born, and how much you can use was based on your level. But, the rate it flowed through your body could be improved.

Vaunn suddenly shot her arm out and grabbed something. I couldn’t see anything until a moment later there was some smoke and a girl formed, held by her neck. She wasn’t even bothering to struggle, just staring at Vaunn with interested eyes. I knew she was powerful since she snuck in here without an issue at all, but she looked just like a little girl that couldn’t be more than ten.

“Who… Who are you?” I asked scooting next to Vaunn.

She turned her eyes on me then smiled. Her form broke into smoke easily escaping Vaunn’s grip then reformed in a sitting position on the floor in front of me. She looked me over with a critical eye before she finally replied. “Your teacher. At least I have a lot to work with.”

“Teacher?” I asked shocked that she even sounded like a child then remembered Oberon’s deal with Siateth.

“Helena Whisper. Do not be fooled by my appearance. I’m one of the oldest people on the continent,” Helena said with a smirk.

I shook my head quickly. “I would never dream of mistaking you as anything than a threat,” I said just as quickly.

“Good.”
