Angel 1x15 [EARLY ACCESS]

Angel 1x15 [EARLY ACCESS]

Comments

Held off on leaving a comment on this video until your btvs 4x16 reaction was up, because your commentary on what a vampire retains of their human personality reminded me of a moment from Doppelgangland which I didn't want to remind you of until after you'd seen the Willow/Tara scenes in 4x16: Willow: That's me as a vampire? I'm so evil and skanky... and I think I'm kind of gay. Buffy: Just remember, a vampire's personality has nothing to do with the person it was. Angel: Well, actually... That's a good point. We can assume that Angel stopped speaking because he intuits that Willow wasn't ready to hear that she's more like vampire!Willow than she thought, but I also think he stops himself because it reveals he sees something, at least, of his human self in Angelus... which, given how much Angelus terrorised Buffy in season 2, wouldn't be something Angel would want to admit to in front of her. What, exactly, he thinks Angelus has in common with his human self still isn't clear and as interesting as your discussion is, it's still a bit spoilery to comment on further - this is definitely a commentary video to look back at on a later date!

Don't forget Drusilla!!! We already saw her in the confession box with Angel talking about her prophecies. But I agree with RavenLord above. Def. something to bring back later.

They really like "William" names on this show, don't they? My friend just painstakingly named her baby so maybe I've been overthinking names. But there's Liam, Spike was William the Bloody (with his look based on Billy Idol), Willy The Snitch who runs Willy's bar, Billy the kid from Nightmares, Billy "Ford" Fordham from Lie to Me, and no spoilers but there are a few future Billies in Angel as well. Also, arguably, WIllow since she's often called "Will". It's odd. I like the fact that Spike and Angel were both Liams when they were alive though.

It's going to take us some time before we can fully discuss what is taken with the soul when a vampire is made, how much of the human they were influences the demon they become. There are multiple episodes to go in both Buffy and Angel that slowly help us, the audience, piece it together. We have had hints, such as in Doppelganger when Angel started to contradict Buffy saying that the human has nothing to do with who the vampire is and then cut himself off for Willow's sake. Now we have this longer look into Angel's mortal life as Liam and can compare that with the mocking brutality of Angelus who goes "for the hurt" before the kill itself, likes to draw it out and play the long game of psychological and then physical torture if the victim is "worthy" of it. Spike's mortal story? We have not seen that. We can only guess and wonder, seeing how different he is from Angelus, and the comparison of his interactions with Drusilla vs. Angelus with Drusilla. I can say no more than this, given where you are in both series. Just plan to put a pin in your discussion here, and we'll all be to revisit with you when more is revealed in future episodes AND future seasons. Both these series, especially Buffy, love to do the slow-burn reveals.
