Adolescence Episode 2

Adolescence Episode 2

I'm so sorry to hear you went through this experience 🫶🏼 that's such a difficult thing to go through and contend with - sending love 💙 I think it's interesting because you're right, even without modern social media there has been the same sort of attachment in certain ways even before it.

My final year of secondary school, I had just turned 18, when a girl in my school was murdered by her older boyfriend. That was more than 30 years ago, but I still found this episode - watching the reactions of the schoolkids - really triggering. I wasn’t close to C when she died but we had played together when we were younger and she was my sister’s best friend. Because I was 18, sis wanted me to sit in when the police interviewed her, so she wouldn’t have to say things in front of our parents. I will never forget that interview. How much goes on in teenagers lives that their parents never know about, will never even imagine. This showed that so well. Some of it is teenagers naturally setting themselves apart from their parents - that’s how we become adults. But there’s an underlying distrust that’s more than just teen rebellion. Like a fault line opens up between the generations. Teachers have no chance of bridging that, but it gives those we now call influencers the chance to fill the gap. For my generation it was Bob Geldof and Nelson Mandela. Liking them was transgressive - I vividly remember Mum explaining to me that Mandela was a terrorist (not that I accepted that). Which gives me just a hint of how for this generation it’s someone like Andrew Tate.

Loved your reaction and can’t wait for the next ep - it’s my favourite! I was in primary school when only some kids had phones, and social media wasn’t as big a thing. I remember playing tag and making up games with my friends and no one was on their phone. In secondary school was when social media became more of a thing, and it was crazy how drastically it changed in-person socialising during break and lunchtime. Many people just played games on their phones or browsed on Instagram. I am very glad I made it out of the education system before TikTok became a big thing though - I’m sure it has had an even bigger effect than any social media before it, both on self image/mental health and how people interact with others.
