Podrick Payne's backstory becomes more intriguing on reread. We know Pod was squiring for Lorimer the Belly before he was hanged for stealing a ham from Tywin and that he was taken into Kevan's charge before being assigned to Tyrion, but any witnesses to Pod's connection to House Payne are dead/indisposed/not in the story. We also never see Pod interact with anyone from House Payne. Perhaps there's no real mystery here and Kevan was able to verify Pod's identity with the Paynes off page and it simply didn't come into the story, but it would make for a interesting parallel to both Dunk and Glendon Ball/Flowers if Pod's status as a Payne were ambiguous or invented. It would also make him an inversion of Egg: rather than being a prince posing as lowborn, Pod would be lowborn posing as highborn.
