Jaime, Arys Oakheart, and Victarion form a continuum of sorts. All have spent their lives as the tools of others. Jaime is self aware enough to realize it and is trying to make a life for himself outside of being a living weapon; Victarion doesn't even realize he's only ever been a tool, even when Moqorro all but explicitly tells him. Arys is somewhere in the middle: he realizes he's only ever been a tool for others, but is ultimately too much of a coward to try to be anything else and ends this chapter by choosing to be Arianne's tool.

I love whenever you can work in a Pynchon reference re: asoiaf, I don’t know if GRRM was directly inspired but there’s certainly a lot of thematic overlap between his work and the Pynch
