I don’t agree with Aiden’s merch company defense for AI. It’s not just offloading your work, it’s trusting the people who you offload to. That’s why I’m sure they have experienced professionals working in their merch company. If you want to relate it to AI, it’s more like hiring some guy who has a vague understanding of how to make clothes, and being proud of the worst tshirt you’ve ever seen when it gets shit out on your desk.

I can confirm about Target employees working at Starbucks. I worked there with my fiance, and despite her not applying for Starbucks at all and voicing she did not want to be involved with it, they made her train there and would pull her out of the grocery department when Starbucks was understaffed.

I think the thing missed in the conversation about AI in both this podcast and DougDoug's positive outlook about AI is what functionally is happening. Because if the idea is that AI reduces barriers to entry I would say that it broadly is the worst solution for reducing barriers of entry.
The barriers to making art are three factors, one is cost, two is time, three is ability. AI does not improve your ability fundamentally it does not teach you how to draw or write better that can't just be found in a free online tutorial. AI costs money if you want ChatGPT pro it costs $200 a month which is more expensive than almost any singular creative tool. When it comes to time that is the only field AI is helpful because if you don't have the time to write or draw it can do it for you.
So when I think about AI and that it's main value is reduction of time I can only see the cynical parts of it.

The sentiment about the target Starbucks is real. I once made the mistake of getting coffee at the target Starbucks in Augusta Maine and there was one person working the location and they had a sink full of dirty dishes… and it had attracted fruit flies. There were visible clouds of bugs to the point where it looked like the pestilence had arrived in that Starbucks. It was haunting and I didn’t see it until after I had paid for my drink

Artificial Intelligence does not pose an existential threat to the young college graduate, modern capitalism does. You don't need to worry about some amateur with a chatbot out performing you with their clever prompting and soulless grammarly editor. If you both apply for the same job, I feel good about your odds. You are smart. You are human. Your passion outweighs any manufactured prose from your opposition.
I am not worried about the prompter, I am worried about the executive, or room full of shareholders who believe they can save a few bones by attempting to do with an AI what you can do with your hands. You will be one wage they will never have to worry about paying.
The AI isn't “stealing” or “taking” your job. Why would it? It doesn't want your tasks. It isn't getting paid. It doesn't need to feed itself or keep a roof over it’s head. You are getting cut from the system by greedy executives who discount the humanity of your work. AI is just a tool. A key can’t ruin your car’s paint unless your ex girlfriend gives it the power to.
The more we rage about AI as some agent in our current and future struggles, the less we allow ourselves to think about the real problem–the people at the top of the ladder who will do anything to keep their pockets full of bones. Fuck em. Don’t use AI.

I'm going to school to become an educator and I've been taking a class that has been talking about the use of AI in school settings, and it's really as scary thing for school settings.
I get Aiden saying that AI is this useful thing, which I tend to agree with, but it's ramifications are a lot greater than I think people realize. Students using AI is going to make a dumber population. There won't be any real learning happening on the student's part when the AI is doing the work for the students. I think the issue is that AI is being utilized as a worker rather than a tool for workers.

I do all my grocery shopping at Winco. Yeah. No credit cards. I just like it because they're still 24/7 in a post covid world so I do my shopping at the early hours of the morning. It's nice. The only problem is when you get stuck behind people trying to food stamps scam the cashier.
I'm not saying food stamps users are bad. But the people who purposely try to get more than what they have in food stamps, and then try to get the cashier to give it to them anyways, and when told to put something back they put back normal food because they really really want to keep their 6 bottles of Pepsi and 4 bags of doritos. Fuck those guys.

I work in Machine Learning, not trying to make any blanket statements, and I don’t know anything about Go, but if I understand correctly, I agree with an aspect of what Nick is saying. There are aspects of creativity and human ingenuity that has not been created or mimicked by AI and while LLMs and GPT has become increasingly more impressive its always an interpolation of the data it’s been given, and never an extrapolation. You can imagine something like a style transfer, where we take a picture of the eiffel tower and have ai recreate it in the style of vincent van gogh, and we go woah I’ve never seen that before. Its still an interpolation of data its been fed and we’ve been able to consume. Everything about the image is aspects of things that have existed. AI is still not making anything NEW.

I’m a 3D modeler, and a life long artist, and my feelings on ai are immediate disgust. But, there’s a caveat to that. What I find fundamentally wrong with ai is the idea of using it to create/generate things. The reason being is that ai is not real artificial intelligence, it is a far more complex version of the algorithms we’ve already had for years. True ai assumes that it has an awareness of self and innate understanding of the world around it. I get frustrated because so many people focus on what you can “generate” with ai, rather than how ai can be used to assist you in the creative process. For example, in motion capture, you often have to clean up the animations because there is a lot of fuzz and inaccuracies. It would be really cool to use ai to help with the clean up process so that you could spend more time actually capturing the actors rather than fixing the animation. I think it can be a great tool, but it can never be an artist. The truly terrifying aspect of ai is not it’s existence, but it’s existence under capitalism and the avenues for more exploitation and cutting of human labor

Target employee here- We refer to Target Starbucks as Tarbucks to reflect the feeling we have there. Also, our baristas are technically “Food and Beverage” employees that are usually cross trained to stock shelves and produce in grocery. Some of them are cross trained in other areas, but they are all Target employees first. Their leadership is usually the leader for all of grocery.

every single artist that professionally makes music today uses some sort of pitch correction software when making music. they don't use it to "pretend to have perfect pitch" (cause perfect pitch isn't just "when you can hit the right notes"), they use it because it significantly speeds up the music production process. instead of having to do, say, 100 takes of a song in order to get it as perfect as it can be in one take, now artists will do 10 or 20 takes, merge together all the best parts, and then use a pitch correction software like melodyne to fix any minor fuck ups. no one is using it to fake singing skills, except for people doing it as a bit. tom scott did a really good video on this like 5 years ago, I'd really recommend it

If anyone is interested in the ai art conversation I highly recommend an anime called Carole and Tuesday. It's a show that centres around 2 people in an American idol style television series who are the only ones who don't use AI to create the music they play, it also has undercurrent themes of racism and Stan culture but it gives a really in depth look at what they were talking about where if AI becomes the normal medium for art. Well worth the watch

Even as an artist, I have spent years trying to learn to draw so I can express my ideas but no matter how hard I try I still just suck at it. So I completely understand AI as a tool to open up creativity to more people without commissioning artists for hundreds/thousands of dollars, even though that is ethically questionable. But ONLY for personal use.
Unfortunately with the way existing AI models have been trained even the above idea is unethical, because they are built from the stolen material of millions of artists without payment or even permission. Then you have the additional layer of the insane environmental impact of AI so I just avoid it all together, even though the desire to see my stories and characters brought to life is so tempting.
Hannah
2025-03-13 01:02:04 +0000 UTC
Generative AI is fundamentally different from the idea of a human mind level AI. There exists no amount of tweaking you can do to current AI models and way of thinking that could ever get to a true human mind style AI. If we could develop that, we would have, but we can't. Its so much easier to just have generative AI, its astronomically harder to program a human brain replicating AI.
We are a LONG ways off from that happening. I don't think we're even making progress.
