You pretty much always have to download and run something, or enter personal information. Windows Defender is also really good now. I have to like severely cripple it in my lab during testing.

Maybe it’s because of the lack of child dominated spaces on the internet these days. They funnel everybody onto one platform and make it ideal for the jaded adult who has no time or desire to individualize their profile past the basics.

Then other companies/websites see those changes and then the whole thing becomes an ouroboros of minimalism.

2024-11-30 10:24:55 +0000 UTCon the whole ads thing and the loss of individuality in web spaces I think its probably two things. 1. brands want to build a distinct personal brand that is about them as a monolothic object to look to rather than be a part of, if instagram offers myspace level customization instagram becomes a tool rather than a space and brand itself. 2. I agree with the driving attention thing, ads will always ring false if you arent interested in them and cold call ads will only ring more false and disgusting if they are contrasted with the unique and immensely more interesting individuality of a person. also, on the internet become more slop, I think everyone who makes content on the internet wants to be successful and leads to millions and millions of people essentially attempting to do what was the task of a room of 30 advertising execs for the last 100 years and its led to this massive almost bacterial evolution of advertising as a science I think this in turn has a feedback loop with traditional advertising agencies that then use those techniques to push ads, its really similar to how every musical aesthetic since the 90s (and sort of before) was absorbed into this commercial machine, its just that literally everyone ever now has the capacity and will to attempt to be a rockstar and there are these unimaginably massive datasets of what is and isnt successful that we essentially analyze by looking at who and what is successful out of the infinite hell pit.

Like if Monster sold an ad to Youtube and I could make a Red Bull profile background, they are probably less likely to sell an ad to Youtube than they would be if I couldn't do that, and would definitely be less likely if I could make my background something not brand safe like anime titties or something

2024-11-29 04:37:28 +0000 UTCmarketing company office guy perspective re: "why do brands become homogenized with serif fonts etc." the broader your net, the more fish you catch. for huge companies like meta and google, they don't care about appealing to niche markets and individuals because the scale they are working on is so insanely large that individuals don't make that much of a difference to them. one size fits most is good enough when "most" is over 80% of billions of people. think of it as min-maxing individualism, which is inherently stifling to creatives. some of the "why does it have to look depressing to catch more fish" is normal stylistic trend stuff (minimalism has been popular for a few years), while some of it is also that internet 1.0 was in itself a more niche market than current internet 2.0 is; the type of people using the internet back in the early 2000s was a smaller cultural subset than the people using it now, which is like... everyone who has access to it. which is ALSO more people than it was 20 years ago. the closest we get to individualism now is profile pictures and individualized ads because that's as far as they care about you as an individual, really.
