2023-07-29 02:04:48 +0000 UTCI’m a musician who plays at a professional level, and one of the best resources that helped me learn how to use my practice time the best I possibly could is Burton Kaplan’s Practicing for Artistic Success: The Musician’s guide to Self-Empowerment. It’s the book I wish I had when I was starting because it teaches you how to practice, which, despite a literal decade-plus of learning from many of the best teachers on my instrument in the world, was something that was never explicitly taught to me. It’s kinda just expected that you’ll bang your head against the practice room wall and figure it out, which is a great way to waste a lot of time and learn a lot of bad habits. Anyway, check out the book. Volume one is the one that helped me, but he has others that could be helpful depending on where you need support. And, tbh, many of its techniques are applicable across different fields, so even if you aren’t a musician, it could be helpful if you need to learn a skill if you’re willing to do the extra work of divorcing the musician-centric yadda yadda from the techniques themselves.
