Ep. 85 Premium - becoming a youtuber [VIDEO]

Comments

well said cumragsmoker

Eli

I think this was a perfect premo episode because while it does have a focus on being a Youtuber, the humor that the guys use to balance out the admittedly heavy topic of career aspirations and goals, with bits like going into screw business brings an equilibrium that cannot be achieved through a normal episode.

cumragcracksmoker

This gotta be one of my favourite eps

Finn B.

I know I'm back-watching so my comment probably won't get viewed by anyone. Still, as someone in college and thinking about my career for the first time I think what they talked about is really helpful/enlightening about making sure you strike a balance between making money and doing the things you're passionate about. However those things interlink is up to you which is really important to remember. Good stuff

Kassie Richwine

Big A is coming back. may not be like it was before, but he plans on returning to content creation; he said he's still passionate about it, plus he still has bills/employees to pay

Garrett

I think Slime's content niche and process is ancillary to his identity and perspective that when applied to anything could be great. His Valorant videos are the only "gaming content" videos that I return to on a consistent basis

makaveli

braindead Logohead Denim Double Knee Utility Pant

makaveli

100% agree

snoasis

I think Slime could stand to fill a big part of the content hole/vacuum that bigA (rest his soul) left, even though it feels like a very cynical take. While he wouldnt be marketing guy, the content sphere is adjacent enough that he stands to gain a potentially very quick audience spurt.

Schmodin

IMO the answer for slimes content is for him to review videos/comedy/books/whatever his viewers send in, and tear them apart (honestly though.) It is consensual, like he said it has to be, but still fits the niche.

stopnads

That is simply not true for most people. Better to understand where you are and maximize joy in your life, than to toil away and hope it you get lucky some day and it goes somewhere.

Dennis Miller

Do you think 50k a year is low in California? I could pay for an okay apartment *on my own* in California with that money. I didn't think it was an attack, more so I just thought that advice was less generally applicable than he thought it was.

Dennis Miller

I feel like it was more so, don’t worry about maximizing the monetization of your dreams. Just put the work in. He even said he was making 50k a year at that time, and in California. No where near well-off. I know listening is hard and it’s easier to feel attacked in some way and project that into a comment to justify it to yourself but this was unnecessary

Max

if slime leaves the pod ill be depressed .. atleast until the zuck replaces him also the screw man arc was golden .

mateo

i'm not sure if this necessarily answers nick's question regarding the ads, but i work for a large makeup corporation that as part of our training is to basically watch ads for products that are new or we're told to push more for customers. these ads are specifically made for our company or other cosmetic companies that are trying to sell their brands. they're not your standard training video, they are sometimes 5+ minute long ads that clearly cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. it's possible that the reason no one seems to be watching those is because they're being sold to other corporations that partner with those brands

elizabeth

big fan of the episodes where you explain industry stuff like this one, thanks :)

Nash Domenichelli

honestly, what great conversation. i was so interested. i like when the funny gets put on the backburner in place of genuine conversation

Garrett

great ep=)

Mia Christensen

I think Nick's right on the money about that type of big spending being low-value for marketing departments, but I'm not 100% sure it translates to it disappearing soon. The conclusion the guys came to about corporations just being full of dumb people is really just true. Thanks to work for a consulting firm I got exposure to the internals at tons of different companies, and this type of low-value spend happens *so often* and for *so many different reasons,* even in examples that are way more cut-and-dry than the big-ish budget ads Nick is describing, and in departments that are way more cost-constrained than marketing. And it'll happen even when people are generally aware that the item is low-value. It's super-resilient; you'll see a category of spending that is CLEARLY low value that nonetheless survives multiple leadership turnovers, heavy budget cuts, etc. (Hell, as a consultant, I was being paid thanks to tons of low value spend.) Happens for a bunch of reasons, like I said, including stuff as simple as "we need to spend out the last of the budget so that it stays the same next year" or "this will look good when I jump ship." Anyways, I'm sure the opportunities Nick is talking about will contract over time as more people come to agree with him that they are low value/as the boomers disappear from the workplace, but I'm not sure it'll happen quickly or that it'll ever totally disappear. But it definitely could happen. I was too young during the recession; maybe that type of situation is enough of a shock or restrains budgets so severely that this stuff actually disappears.

Omar M

I would mainline any any all Slime content like I am a heroin addict and his content is that sweet sweet smack

Nathanael Lyman

mfs will literally stop being a hater for a month and rethink there whole purpose on this planet

Joshua Billingsley

I would watch Content Creator Slime, especially if his content expands beyond gaming. There's no doubt he has the personality/comedic skill for it. Mogul Mail? SLIME POSTAL

Ryan M

Slime keeps pumping out valo digest I'm watching

Austin Miller

Really enjoyed the conversations this episode!

Gideon Ratcliff

Great bonus ep :)

Nekrosu

I’m just a little confused here, can I get some clarity on what kind of screws I’m counting? Are we talking machine, sheet metal, caps, or all of the above?

Spagetti

Bro did u forget why this is called the yard? From when they were all shit broke living together. If you truly put your all into what you love itll pay off someday

Evan Wright

well said.

byAsh

Hope you've enjoyed being a patron ludwig7

Maxwell Reichart

if slime becomes a content creator can he unblock me pls

Calum Madge

Concerning the thinking about what you're passionate about, I personally think you should never stop doing that. I used to try to plan out everything years in advance and think whatever I go to college for is what I'll be doing for the rest of my life but at some point I realized it's better to just do what you want to do right now, instead of what you think you want to do in 3 years and see where it leads you. It also makes you more flexible to capitalize on unforseen opportunities. That's if you're in a position to be able to do that of course. You got this!

Jan S

Yeah family can really fuck you up in that way. You got this man, just keep yourself steady and you'll be okay.

Dennis Miller

The first part of this pod is probably the most "well-off person" conversation you guys have had. Most people definitely need to make money first so they can survive, I don't think they could "do what they love and get money later" as Nick said. With that said great content as always and I'm glad you all are doing well.

Dennis Miller

Massive underestimate on Maximilian_DOOD he streams like 10-17k viewers. Also even though Slime can be the funniest on the Yard I don't think it translates that well to constant content creator grind, it's like easy to say way harder to do type thing.

Scott

i really like the more serious and thoughtful convos going on this ep. its genuinely super engaging and interesting, hope to see more

Storm__M__

kai is a horrible fkin person its so sad all his dick riders still see nothing wrong with how he "handled" the situation he's just as disgusting as his rapist friend i can't even enjoy the streaming/YT community anymore when ppl bring up that disgusting bastard

just

This is one of my favorite premium videos. Maybe just a favorite in general, but I'm not 100% sure why. I think it's because there's more serious discussion about topics they're each passionate about. It might just be the screw company bit though

Bryan Horner

If Slime wants easy, fast, and dirty content creator money then I bet he could make hundreds of twitter unblock form videos and he would achieve the heights he talked about.

Quinn

i like screws

Nathan Mailloux

I had a math professor that made his own textbook, hand spiral bound them and sold them at the bookstore at cost. If you wanted the pdf instead of a physical book that was free.

w

💤

Warren Fredrikson

I'm here for Slime's content creation endeavors

Brandon Isem

Nick where'd u get those jeans they look sick

Zee Rocks

Great ep. Both the yard main pod and especially the patreon have been bangers lately

Luke Callaghan

those short story ads definitely exist, and especially for Apple, they make a ton of them and whenever they come out, they used to play them at the beginning of every shift when i used to work at an apple store, so we saw them constantly. For Apple it always came across as more about the brand image than anything, and they have basically infinite money, so it's hard to compare them to everybody else

Maybe

I firmly believe that roman from succession is just slime if he did black tar heroin

George

It gives me relief that you guys are still thinking of you're careers and what you guys are really passionate about, I'm 19 and feel this pressure of needing to know what I want to do constantly. Mostly I think the pressure comes from family that I can't shake.

Lizosaurus_rex

Let me blow your mind a little bit more. Courage actually got famous because he won a Mr. Beast challenge. He went from like 1500 viewer aversge to 10k average overnight because he won i believe a 30k fortnite match playing solo.

Thrill_I_Am

As someone who works for a very large successful company the statement “ all of apple departments must be working at max efficiency “ made me spit out my water I was drinking.

jeff

https://youtube.com/shorts/tFzzFMoT0oU?feature=share

Alec Webb

i'd watch slime content :)

PaleWaffle

Mogul Screws

Delta J. Bearlines

My dad (has worked there for 36 years) and I (temporarily) work at a stainless steel Fitting Manufacturer (one of these “nuts and bolts factories”) and I can confirm the owners are absolutely fucking minted despite putting in absolutely 0 work.

Alex Dewhirst

Not fully thru the ep but im with a slime content pilled. Been an enjoyer since bad melee and before would love for him to take this route n truly believe in it. I know if he hits the level he wants to achieve he would create great things <3 plus he said he wanted to be like max which i think just being one of my longest youtuber(streamers) ive followed just says he's there for what he loves

Drew Rodrigues

I would buy screw merch

Miles

This is such a great ep. I love the hahas but it's really interesting to hear a more serious "talking shop" type angle from people who normally, at least for me, are the funny characters on my phone screen. Anyway, mmmm yummy screws or something

Alex Meiller

I think the ads Nick was talking about are the ones that play on like airport terminal touchscreens or like malls in Switzerland. Still a lot of people seeing them

Manuel Martinez

Lol. I literally went down the Roman history pipeline from the exact same video.

Jack Cassai

aiden saying "i DO like guys" was so funny but nobody heard i think lmao

Alex Senator

I’d love to support Slime’s endeavor to become his own content creator. I’m still just so scared of him tho with how much he hates parasocial andys and his heavy hand on the block/mute button. 💀 But he definitely could make fucking fantastic shit!! 🫶🏻

Bimmy

Half of the comments are like: "Slime's take on the economic state of Youtube is a very intersting one and here's why" and the other half is just "mmmmm screws"

Joshua Campbell

Booooy do I loooove screws

EnderK03

What a great episode

Alex Leever

This is easily the best premium episode. More shop talk, please.

Khurram Dharani

Aimen’s Artisans Screws, Nuts, & Bolts

Trevin

Took slime way longer to get across that he wanted leverage as an influencer to get sponsors for projects than it should have. Either way his idea sounds cool and I hope he gets to where he wants to be. More slime content is great 👍🏽

SlayR

slime wants to become a content creator to take it back :salute:

Gazian

i feel like slime was born to be an entertainer. i hope he pursues content creation more.

Lio

I think it'd be kinda sick for you guys to get in touch with a screw and bolt manufacturer in LA and just go there and spend a day working or checking out the place, I feel like you've probably got enough clout that someone would let you

Darcy Phillips

Nick you don't need to be right 1001% of the times man. Man's doesn't let other ppl talk when he's tryna prove something

noshawty

Actually a really interesting conversation in around the marketing spend. I think some portion of it is internal/business-to-business focused where it's essential just a point of pride for the marketing team or an attempt at winning a marketing award within niche circles. I do think Nick's concerns are partially valid and the trend is certainly displayed in the data of where marketing budgets are going. It does seem to be shifting towards highly specific direct to consumer marketing through influencer marketing as well as tools like facebook/google ads. In addition measuring ROI is getting better allowing management to better see the actual effect of an ad rather than "idk shit looked good and 200,000 people were watching NCIS SVU HD HRA season 15 while during ours spot".

Matthew Smith

What Slime's talking about is actually this mindset I've had for a while. Being "rich and clouted" just gives you the comfort and means to do and create big cool things, and that comfort and freedom is what I aspire to achieve, don't know through what means.

pahamajammas

such a good ep! was really nice hearing from the boys how they think about these things also i would absolutely watch every slime video if he decided to go the content creator route

YELRAW

This episode really reinvigorated my creativity and passion. What I appreciate the most about The Yard is that it is real friends having conversations about life without shying away from deeper, more complex, and more personal topics.

Kellen

Hey loved the pod! Who is the big corporate director? I’d love to check out their stuff via Vimeo or whatever

Mack DeBernardo

Maximilian dood is my favorite content creator. Go for it slime

Griffin Buswell

I reallyyy enjoyed this episode, fs a good change of pace as I enjoy the insights/opinions of the industry you guys are in that we only see as consumers. and I could use a bolt or two here and there. and nuts too. loved slimecicle on this episode too!

elliot

I work in construction. Could help you get your screw business off the ground.

Ryan Abouchedid

the yard's screw and bolts manufacturing subsidiary, the home

SmeefDong

If we’re being honest, slime has the ability to be on the same level as someone like schlatt. He has the humor and lovability factor that schlatt has, but it would probably take a lot of tolerance to deal with a similar audience.

Josh

Mogul Screws lets get her done boys

Ed_Gae

My roommate's girlfriend is a mechanical engineer that works on the team that designs Apple's product screws, loving this screw arc lmfao

Adam Lucek

TI 84’s are very useful and worth the money for me

Jabug_

bro nick fucking looks like cal kestis bruh

Alric Espinosa

My dream is getting in on the ground floor and making high quality bolts and nuts

Jonathan Gordon

Regarding if the clickbait= more views, I think that its higher numbers but maybe lower retention of fans. Like with faze rug, everytime hes in recomended hes getting a lot more people clicking in, and a smaller amt of ppl being like oh this guy sucks hes lying. So maybe comes down to as a creator if retention or number more inportant to you. I also think you can tow the line of clickbait but is funny/ironic. Enjoyed this episode a lot :)

Kelly Garnand

the convo about ads at the end was really interesting and stimulating. fun to get a window into a world i dont understand and dont work anywhere near. really enjoyed this ep in general

Dan Drew

One thing I will say is that the Riot video Slime and Nick did is easily one of the funniest pieces of content I’ve consumed in the past few years

Travis

Mistaked a nail for a screw and ate it. Explain better next time nut boys

Andrew Avila

fire fits this ep

Madducks

Damn, the boys got me thinking back when I had no dreams and just like progressing very well in the food industry. I had no dreams of being a chef and respected as one but it just kinda happened you know. I just “bit the bullet” from dish washer to Chef working at different places and asking questions. Through my journey where I am now I grew a passion for food and I’m obsessed with it! Money was an issue. For me it was that I finally found a dream and career I can go FULL SEND and be really proud of it. No raegrets here 😂. I love this pod man

Jeffrey Farris

this episode was pretty gnarly sick man

Jay-P

loved listening to them talk about their aspirations, particularily Nick. also, I'm biased since i've been a slime fan for almost 6 years now, but his grasp on comedy PLUS his already large following almost guarantees success in the content landscape. excited to see what content-pilled slime creates

husky

Kirby gave some really interesting and insightful commentary about the internal mechanics behind advertising in this episode.

Will

I think that slime would be a great content creator and bring new things to the space that other creators might not but I think the most important thing is that you would be happy doing so

Cheyenne Beus

slime sleeping in his clothes on the floor like he fell asleep at a flop house furthers proves my stance that slime is punk

intravenous_cocaine_user

Mogul poos

Alex Malamet

I love Slime's Valorant videos they're always funny

Garrett

Mogul Screws

Jeremy

I would love to see slime go part time with both for like 6 months to a year. Then we don't have to immediately loose our little bear. That way we get weaned off from his presence but also he can see how he feels about taking the content creation more seriously. Personally, I would watch the shit out of some primo thought out youtube content.

Jason Patton

Shout out Jan misali (also slime he’s Italian btw)

pods

something about slime going from wanting to, if he could, send all content creators to burn in hell to wanting to be one himself is a beautiful display of becoming what you hate most. bravo

Rachel Barelka

This ep got me re thinking my carrer

Alex Bally

If I ever make it as a youtuber I'll say it was because of the Yard Premium ep. 85

dannyjcast

Next tier list should be drunk type of guys

Vova

Highly enjoyed listening to Slime this episode. Thank you for the content Gentlemen.

Tanner

I would find it believable that large corporations have marketing department budgets that require them to spend it or risk losing that budget the next year.

Eric Gutermann

Just to hop on the megacorps are efficient some guy dents random invoices to google for years stealing millions for years before being caught.

sagehoge

Norton Anthology copies go hard as a monitor stand. Would also enjoy Slime content i been on his shit since 2017 homies bad melee got me through grad school. media analysis streams were my favorite.

Cristian Avila

Yesss slime, become part of the machine

Shouqy

enjoyed the discussion about life goals and ambition this ep

Zee Rocks

If Slime started making videos I'd 100% watch them. shoot I know he's into dark souls, id watch some lore vids from him any day.

Hunter Kennedy

I would be a slime viewer gladly, funny and relatable in his outlook

ricardo

i'd watch the fuck outta slimes content

stephanie

I work in a very similar industry to Nick. Myself and my colleagues make high production value, longer form advertisement pieces for brands typically in the bike world. To me, almost all of our efforts feel futile at times because companies will throw tens of thousands of dollars into a film we make for it to be a footnote in a newsletter and then never see the light of day.

Ben Frawley

I think traumatic events (dad dying or seeing close friends losing their jobs) triggers the flight or fight response and taking a look at your life around you seeing what you could do with it to impact the sorrow around you is a natural response and probably the constructive way to deal with those emotions.

Ray Parry

Appreciated y'alls analysis on not just your goals, but specifically why you have them. My whole friend group is in a (similar) situation; we're all successful in our careers at a young age , homeowners, etc. Now the conversations turn into well... What's next? What do we really want out of the life we have left? Nobody worth your time just goes day to day without ambition.

BigW

I can't lie, this main episode and premo episode combo is easily my favorite in a while

birdfood

Whatever any of you guys ever decide to do career wise thanks for sharing your thoughts and the entertainment. Godspeed in the screw business.

Gingerthoughtzz

SLIME GO THROUGH W CREATING CONTENT

James Cameron

I can't wait to buy Aimen brand headstuds for my Subaru STI
