Understanding Abstraction is Very Helpful in Electronics and Computing

Around the beginning of a new year, I usually choose a topic that is related to the channel and universal enough to be interesting for everybody’s life. Today, it is the topic of “abstraction” and its influence on our electronics projects. Understanding this topic also helps you decide on the next steps in your career.

Hi André, Parts of loving the details or not for sure is personality. So changing completely would not be good, I think. Still, sometimes abstraction is quite useful. So, good luck on your journey!

Hi Andreas. I'm a long time viewer with the same accent. Thank you for this video! I often get lost in details, but I also love them which makes me kind of a historian. But it also distracts me of my goals, i have to learn to abstract. Thank you for the wise words. Have a good 2024!

Hi Sarah, I am glad the video resonated with you. I am sure capabilities learned when writing efficient code, like reducing complicatedness, can also be valuable on higher levels. If it can be translated into architecture, for example. However, abstraction is not an easy task for many people, particularly people who love the details. Having a goal is a good start!

Great video, Andreas. This got me thinking a lot while I was watching it as I tend to resist moving up the abstraction layer with a lot of my work and projects and know it is both because I grew up in my career working at lower levels plus my inherent having to understand how things works tends to make me stay below the current top abstraction layer. Yes, in my software career, I started working with very limited processor power, memory and hard disk space, it taught me to write efficient code and have suffered from blaming younger people for not being as effecient as I am with their code. I think for me I need to embrace the higher levels a bit more and I will then achieve better results with my projects. Thanks for a very thought provoking video. Btw, while I was watching the video, I kept thinking of the 7 levels of the TCP stack as the perfect example of an abstraction.
