2025-05-02 03:12:57 +0000 UTCTownships in the US, specifically those in Illinois and other Midwestern states, are actually a weird byproduct of the Jeffersonian grid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survey_township Obviously not all townships are Mercator squares, but an awful lot of them are! I grew up in a “village”, which was in a township within Cook County. (Cook County is actually the city plus the older *northern* suburbs.) Some townships run public secondary school districts, but others do not. Aside from that I can’t think of anything they do, since most things are municipal (i.e. village, town, or city) or county. (As a byproduct of the Jeffersonian grid, what is now Midway Airport was originally a public high school with lots and lots of land, hence why there was space there to build an airport.) If you want to understand the relationship between Cook County and the City of Chicago, the best illustration is the Cook County Building and Chicago City Hall being mirror images of each other splitting in half a city block. From the street they look like a single building, but internally they are separate other than the pedway, and IIRC City Hall has a roof garden while the Cook County Building does not. The main benefit of being in Cook County but not the City of Chicago is that you still have an insanely strict building code. Electrical wiring outside Cook County scares me.

The softcore Porn Producer/Television Mogul/King of Germany/Bhuddist Messiah who for a while was running in every mayoral race in southwest Germany he could get his grubby little hands on and not once broke 5% of the vote. (this might have to be a Nova ep, most of the sources are in German)
