Interesting topics Nick. I don’t use Mint as a daily driver (I use QubesOS), but do like the work they have done to date. I’m pretty concerned about Mint’s direction, considering I’ve just moved my Dad over to Mint from Windows 8. If Mint does start modifying apps just for their desktop, I’m concerned that they won’t have the manpower to maintain it all properly and things will start breaking. Not something I want my Dad to worry about in his 80s 😁 Would be fantastic to see if/when the desktop developers collaborate on some of these libraries to get some cohesiveness across different platforms. One of the few remaining hurdles for the Linux community as a whole.

2024-05-16 23:49:08 +0000 UTCYes, it will only work if other desktops collaborate, but Budgie probably won't, as they want to move away from GTK anyway, and XFCE and MATE don't have that many people, so not sure how this will work out! They're probably already too deep with GTK with some of their apps, and learning an entire new library and toolkit might be too difficult?

It's a good idea to have 'desktop agnostic' or in better terms themeable apps, but I'm unsure about the effect. If XFCE, budgie, cinnamon would cooperate, there would be benefits. In case of budgie I doubt that considering they're changing ideas every year about toolkit, direction and so on... What I don't understand : why not use Qt instead? There are themeable Qt apps available, it's lightweight and desktop agnostic. 🤷♂️

2024-05-01 12:53:41 +0000 UTCThe Mint team proposing to collaborate more with other desktop environment teams is awesome, I really like that idea to make apps that look good on different desktop environments and not having to rely on Gnome as much anymore. But I do wonder if there's enough manpower to developp and maintain said apps. Is it possible to keep the simplicity and intuitive design of Gnome apps while making them look good on different desktops environments? The post did feel a bit hostile towards app devs targeting Gnome, not a great move by Clem. Neofetch being archived is probably going to turn into an international commemoration Holiday for Arch users 😂.
