Mapping Gumption

t_roberts post Mapping Gumption

file under: adventures in urban planning

A key location in the world of Mystery Flesh Pit National Park is the nearby (fictional) city of Gumption. I decided to make the nearest city to the park fictional for the creative freedom it would allow me in crafting the world, and I’ve been satisfied with that decision.

I’ve attempted to characterize Gumption as somewhat average and unremarkable in service of the story’s believability, posi...

End-of-summer Art Update (Wildlife!)

Good afternoon everyone! It has been a long time since the last update, and for that I apologize. I have been hard at work during the summer months working through a small mountain of illustrations, diagrams, designs, and maps in preparation for the Mystery Flesh Pit ttRPG book. While much of this work I am intentionally withholding until the release of the book, there are a few creature illustrations that I am excited to share here; some familiar, some new!

Video Commentary Track Poll

Hello Patrons! A few of you have DMd me asking if I'd ever do a commentary track where I discuss the production of  both my Mystery Flesh Pit and Spectral Haptics videos, so I'm gauging interest with a poll:

t_roberts post Wildlife Illustration - Aquifer Leech

Chaetoderma repens

These tube-like mollusks are similar to a shell-less clam or mussel. They can grow to a length of two meters and are equipped with two retractable, mucosal proboscises which branch into many thousands of microscopic tubes. These small tubes, which are able to penetrate even the densest tissues by finding microscopic fractures in its structure, sap liquid moisture from which the Leech feeds. Aquifer Leech are typically found in well-oxygenated aquatic environm...

Rare photo from early days of the pit.

t_roberts post Rare photo from early days of the pit.

This gives a good idea of how small the operations were back in the early 1970s; about 3 months after the pit was "discovered". In this aerial photo, you can see the natural entry orifice (pre-excavation), a temporary electric lift tower, as well as a utility trunk connecting the surface power and ventilation plant to the basecamp down in the pit. There's also a hydraulic dredging crane that was used to "bite" away at some of the flesh down in the pit to enlarge the working area and remove ma...

Wildlife Dossier

Hello Patrons!

I'm happy to report that I have begun to get back into a semi-regular routine of working on MFP content, primarily the Book. Doing so has required me to nail down hundreds of scattered details and elements of the lore, and then describe how such elements interact with and effect each other. One of the more challenging aspects of the world of the MFP has been designing the myriad parasitic creatures found within the pit. The attached document is a reference tool I have w...

Happy Holidays + small update

t_roberts post Happy Holidays + small update

I hope everyone is able to be enjoying the holidays in some way these past few days. I’ve been kept pretty busy being a dad to our new family member, Wright Roberts, so things have been a little slow as far as content goes.

That said, I’m really hoping to have some Patreon exclusive stuff ready for all of you before New Years, so if you like the MFP wildlife, stay tuned! And merry Christmas!

Some Notes re: The Flesh Pit Videogame

I've seen a few questions and comments surrounding the recently-announced MFP Kickstarter that I wanted to address in the interest of open communication and transparency.

1. My involvement with the game project has not and will not affect my process of writing the book. My role in the game's development is such that almost all of the art and designs I will be providing are things I would have already View Post

Mystery Flesh Pit Videogame Kickstarter!

A talented group of developers have teamed up with me to create a Videogame adaptation of the Mystery Flesh Pit! I will be contributing towards the writing and art direction of the project with full creative discretion. And, I will be posting exclusive behind the scenes and WIP content here, as usual.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in, consider sharing it!

MFP Interior General Concept Art/Guidelines

t_roberts post MFP Interior General Concept Art/Guidelines

I quickly put together this "style guide" for a very exciting upcoming project which I cannot reveal just yet. I thought all of you might enjoy this sneak peek. I think what a lot of fictional projects which try to depict the interior of a living organism get wrong is that the interior spaces within flesh & tissues are extremely claustrophobic, dark, and very stringy. So, to avoid what I call "Meat Tube" syndrome, I deconstructed a typical detail within the fleshpit to reveal the...

Happy Halloween!

This video marks the official start of my new project, Spectral Haptics. I will continue to populate its website, spectralhaptics.org, with writings and artwork soon, but for right now, I'm returning to work on materials for Mystery Flesh Pit.

Thank all of you for your continued support of my work! This is by far the most complex video I've ever made, and producing it has grea...

Mystery Flesh Pit Book Excerpt - "Spelunker"

The first few days were quiet, but by Wednesday, a small group of trucks had become a permanent fixture on the landscape. A metal A-frame of welded fencing pipe had been installed near the cleanest edge of the hole and staked in place. Backed up to the frame was a work truck with a sizable motorized cable winch, and a spool with more than 2,000 feet of line. The first major task undertaken by the workers was to replicate the experiment previously conducted by Dal...

Coop & Friends (quick sketch)

t_roberts post Coop & Friends (quick sketch)

One of the items on my backlog of things to revisit is the "Explore the FUNderground!" side of marketing/branding materials by giving our mascot Caver Coop some other suitably-alliterative companions.

I'll ink & color these, as well as add in some cartoon wildlife as well, and probably put it in a 90s plastic lunchbox.

Cutaway Illustrations Photoshop files.

These are the raw, layered Photoshop files for two of the large cutaway posters: the Entry Orifice and the Bronchial Forest. I wanted to include the LVC also, but the file upload limit of Patreon is too restrictive. If anyone wants that file, I'll be glad to post it separately. These are the files for the illustrations only, they do not contain the text/graphics overlays featured in the final versions on the main website. My thought is that these may be useful or interesting to someone who wi...

Early Access Post - Surviving 2007 T-shirt

t_roberts post Early Access Post - Surviving 2007 T-shirt

Really wish I would have had this idea before the 4th, but oh well. Heavily inspired after seeing Jordan Peele's new film NOPE (which I highly recommend to any fleshpit fans!), I imagined that there would have been promotional t-shirts for sale at the 2007 July 4th event. The idea of finding one -somewhere- after all these years was morbidly fascinating, so I put this together. I might put a version of this shirt up on the shop, but I'll have to look into full-garmen...

Book Writing Progress (Sneak Peak)

t_roberts post Book Writing Progress (Sneak Peak)

Things have been pretty quiet as far as "Postable Content" goes, but things are still moving slowly along. After getting a little burnt-out with it for awhile, I'm back to finishing the Ranger Station model for a large cutaway poster. (See above)

Of larger concern to me, while also working on some book-exclusive wildlife artwork, is the writing of the book itself. Beyond a respectable volume of new charts, designs, and illustrations, the book will feature an extensive history, timelin...

Getting back into creature design as I'm working on materials for the coffee table book. I want to have a sort of compendium of illustrations for the various flora and fauna within the Pit, and I've been holding off until I had the right tools to do so. Now I finally feel comfortable tackling this phase of illustration, and look forward to posting updates as I develop them.

Starting with the Abyssal Copepod as it's both a somewhat complicated design to fully work out, and it has becom...

t_roberts post Update on Enamel Pins, and behind the scenes of a new Worldbuilding Project

Good morning patrons!

Enamel Pins Restock

I know many of you are disappointed that you were unable to get one of the enamel pins that went up for sale earlier this week, but there will be another batch soon! The impromptu nature of the sale was due to how it came together: a fan was producing the pins and selling them on Etsy, but we came to an agreement to sell the remainder on the main website. With the next batch, I will make sure that all Benefac...
