An early experimental spaceship. Built as a test-bed for WF technology experiments. Eventually it paved the way for a type of hybrid WF Drive. Thrust was still provided by fusion engines - made more efficient by WF containment fields, but the WF technology itself provided an inertialess bubble of space for the ship. So although the speed was still limited by the fusion engines, it was no longer limited by the amount of G-forces the occupants could withstand.

The Usual Suspects

thisnorthernboy post The Usual Suspects

For the WFW book, I created a bunch of little character silhouettes - mainly to give scale to the ship data sheets. As part of Weird Field War, I wanted to take those silhouettes a bit further, so I've created much more detailed character silhouettes. I've actually produced so many, that they're going to become a product I hope to sell to indie game makers.
But, the main reason for them is to add something to WF War.

If you had to pick and name a character, just based on the silhouet...

On A Distant Shore.

Hammar stood, or at least their Avatar stood, on an outcropping of coral in the midst of a bright blue ocean. Some way distant, although Hammer was being relayed information across the whole electromagnetic spectrum - so distance was largely irrelevant, the coral blossomed from the sea in a mound fifteen kilometres across. Rising at first gradually as it narrowed, the coral stretched upward. At a height of five thousand metres, its width was down to six kilometres, five thousand more and it n...

Sketchbook Spaceships

thisnorthernboy post Sketchbook Spaceships

I've drawn so many spaceships by now, that I don't sketch anything out first in pencil. I just got straight to ink and see what comes out. What I enjoy about this, is the fact I don't really know what I'm drawing until I'm a few minutes in. Also - paper with a bit of texture, in this case Daler Rowney heavyweight cartridge, does make for nice close-up photos!

Hi folks, a full update coming shortly - about the page and where we go with it next - but in the meantime, I thought it might be fun to provide a couple of black and white sketch sheets for you (or your kids) to colour. Bonus points for orange.

Apologies

Hey everyone, I just wanted to apologise for the lack of updates here lately. Between commercial work, and a complete writers block - WFW has just been impossible to make any headway on. I'll be pausing billing indefinitely until I can commit to regular posts.

If anyone wants to pause or reduce their memberships for the moment, I completely understand. I will be looking at tiers soon as they haven't really worked. I've found it pretty difficult to keep on top of rewards, and, I think be...

Waystation Magellan

thisnorthernboy post Waystation Magellan

Magellan was positioned in orbit around Saturn, in the Enke Gap, approximately 200,000km from the satellite Pan. Named, somewhat controversially, for the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the station has a reputation as being fiercely forward thinking and tenacious in the pursuit of scientific advancement.

WF Waystations

Huge spacestations relying on WF tech. Often kilometres long, with crew complements in the thousands. Usually positioned at strategic points throughout the solar system. The Waystations became incredibly important during the war.

The first three to be built, Alpha, Beta and Gamma, were situated around the Moon, near Mercury, and close to the orbit of Jupiter, respectively. The fourth, notably larger, The Acteaon, built in 2362, was placed in a Mars orbit and became an important hub for ...

The Prodigal Son (part 2)

Part 1 here.

Prentice took a seat, and waited for Ada to begin. Stood behind a small sphere set in to the floor of the lab, Ada raised a hand. Information filled the space between Ada and Prentice. Floating in air, projected by the sphere, data flowed. Prentice looked carefully for several minutes, before breaking out in a grin.

“It’s them?” He asked?

“It’s impossible to know for c...

Evolution not revolution

thisnorthernboy post Evolution not revolution

After the messages and the instruction sets had stopped - or more accurately once humanity had realised they'd stopped - the scientists and engineers of earth went in to overdrive trying to hack WF tech.

Towards the end of the 23rd century, humankind had already made progress in this area. Some limited WF ships had been built without alien blueprints, but they were pretty limited. Only in the latter years of that century did science really manage to crack WF physics. The resulting ships...

thisnorthernboy post Space Racer No. 03.

Designed for the GTFX Racing Series around the cloud-tops of Jupiter. Weird Field Engineering creates a racer with exceptional speed and manoeuvrability while protecting the pilots in an inertialess cockpit.

Something of a mid-point between a genuine WF ship and the traditional fusion ships of the pre-WF era, these racers put on a fantastic show. The Drive plume is incandescently bright, often trailing many kilometres behind the ships.

Billing pause - again

Hi all,

Hope you're all staying well. I'm afraid, through a combination of busyness on my day job, and helping my wife with her wedding flowers business (all gone a bit crazy since the end of lockdown), I'm struggling to find time to write or draw any WFW content.

So once again, I'm pausing billing on my page. Nobody will be billed for August (I  think this is the fourth month in a row I've had to pause charging).

I'll start billing as soon as I have some con...

No billing for the next couple of months

Hi all, as is pretty obvious, I'm struggling to produce content for the Patreon page right now. I've had a few projects on the go that have limited my time and, to be honest, I think I'm suffering from the 'difficult second album' syndrome.

I have quite a bit of Phase 2 written, but very little drawn so far, and I'm reticent of showing stuff in such an unfinished state. I think because I have a very definite narrative for Phase 2 in mind, I'm just finding it a bit more difficult. I'll g...

On Prentice’s 25th birthday, his father gifts him the WF Rockefeller, named after their ancestors. Prentice is the world’s most eligible bachelor and a renowned playboy. His parties are legendary, the number of broken hearts left in his wake a tragedy. Seldom seen without several beauties (of any sex - Prentice is wholeheartedly pansexual) the youngest Aldrich flits from one decadent adventure to anothe...

Next update coming tomorrow…

Where does he go next? The rings of Saturn? The Casinos of Kowloon II?

Not quite. Maybe he's not all that people think he is.

Sneak peek 2

Some of my outlining for phase 2.

2378 - A message containing the instructions for 8,300 spaceships is received. The instructions include plans for 7000 warships.

Panic.

Why has this been sent? Is it a natural progression from the previous types of ship? Has humanity been deemed worthy, or trustworthy, enough for a fleet of warships? Is there an imminent threat? Are the senders of the messages wanting us to join them in a war? Or do they want us t...

Commissioned by Graeme, to pay tribute to his uncle who flew with the RCAF during WWII.

Built at the Canadian shipyard in Windsor Mills, Quebec, the WF Thundersnow was originally in service with the National Space Service. During a tour of the outer planets, there was a need for a rescue mission under the sea ice of Enceladus. The Thundersnow, being both close by and capable, was put to work - saving the lives of 18 scientists whose facility had lost pr...

WF Skull - Death Drive

thisnorthernboy post WF Skull - Death Drive

By the late 2200s, humanity had wrestled much meaning from the Alien instruction sets, far beyond simply using them to build the spaceships. Centuries of research had expanded knowledge in huge numbers of fields of science. One field had remained stubbornly resistant - that of WF propulsion. WF Drives and spaceships had been tweaked and improved slightly - range and speed had increased, the cool down periods of the drives had been reduced - but building a brand new WF drive, with all the perf...
