Christmas 1919. Downton Abbey is hosting a lavish Christmas party, yet despite being the season of goodwill, tensions are rife and Bates' arrest has cast a shadow over the festivities.

1918: A wounded Canadian officer comes to Downton to recuperate and unsettles everything. He confides his secret to Lady Edith but what are his motives? And where will this leave the family? Robert announces that the ceasefire will begin on the 11th November.

Robert receives some shocking news from the front, Daisy's relationship with William moves faster than she would like, and Bates is taken aback when Vera threatens to expose old secrets which could bring down the Crawleys. Mary is the only one who can protect the family, but she pays a high price when she turns to Carlisle for help.
Tensions flare between Isobel and Cora over the management of the convalescent home, Ethel's flirtation with Major Bryant lands her in more trouble than she could ever imagine, and there is worrying news from the front about Matthew and William. Meanwhile, Branson declares his feelings for Sybil, Robert goes out of his way to bring back Bates, and O'Brien sticks her nose into Mrs Patmore and Daisy's business.
It is 1917 and Downton has been turned into a convalescent home for wounded officers. There is a lot to do, and the arrival of the first patients turns the house upside down. Matthew brings General Sir Herbert Strutt to inspect the home, unaware that Branson is planning to make the visit a memorable one. Meanwhile, Violet hopes to find skeletons in Lavinia's closet.
It is April 1917 and, with most of the men away at the front, Carson is finding it tough maintaining standards in the house. Robert's new valet Henry Lang has just returned from the war, but O'Brien is the only one to notice that he is not well. The suicide of a young officer prompts Isobel to suggest that they convert Downton into a convalescent hospital. Also, Mary hears that Matthew is returning.
It is now 1916 and the family and servants are preparing the house for a benefits concert in aid of the local hospital. New housemaid Ethel has replaced Gwen but she soon has everyone's backs up - and O'Brien plays a cruel trick on her. Robert is now Lord Lieutenant of the County but is disappointed by not being at the front.
Cora discovers she is pregnant, which leaves Mary wondering how to answer Matthew's proposal, since his situation would change completely if the baby turns out to be a boy. Elsewhere, Mary accuses Edith of spreading the story that threatens to ruin her. Meanwhile, O'Brien is angry when she suspects … MORE
Sybil's growing interest in politics lands her in trouble when Bates lets slip to Robert that she attended a rally with Branson. The saga of the wine thief is brought to a head after Bates makes a shocking revelation and hands in his notice. Edith seems to have found an unexpected admirer when Sir Anthony Strallan calls, and Carson receives a letter informing him of the rumours harming Mary.
As the village prepares for its annual flower show, Isobel and Violet clash over Violet's long-held Best Bloom title. Meanwhile, Daisy is unable to get over what she witnessed on the night of Pamuk's death, and Mary is introduced to a potential suitor, but she thinks he is too old and stuffy - and she seems to be more interested in Matthew.
The fair arrives in the village and Mrs Hughes finds herself the centre of speculation when she meets a former suitor who makes her question her position at Downton. Also, Violet and Isobel are in conflict over a medical ailment affecting Molesley. Elsewhere, Carson fears there is a thief at Downton.
When Cora invites Evelyn Napier to stay at Downton, he brings along his friend Kemal Pamuk, an attache at the Turkish Embassy. Pamuk is attracted to eldest daughter Mary, but he later suffers a fatal heart attack in her room. Mary turns to her mother for help, but they are not the only ones who know that Pamuk was in Mary's room that night. Meanwhile, the staff find out that Housemaid Gwen is taking a correspondence course.

The ladies of Wisteria Lane reveal all in a series of flashbacks highlighting their arrivals on the infamous avenue. Back in the present, Mike competes with Karl for Susan, Lynette faces a crisis in her marriage, and Gabrielle learns more about Carlos and Xiao-Mei's seemingly closer relationship.
Flashbacks take us back to to moving-in day on Wisteria Lane for Bree, Lynette, Susan and Gabrielle and to how Mary Alice brought them all together. Also, in other flashbacks the Applewhites' dark past in Chicago is revealed. Back in the present, Bree gets some frightening news, and Susan moves into a trailer after her house is set on fire.
Reaching the end of her tether, Bree checks herself into the Fairview pyschiatric hospital. Elsewhere, Lynette suspects that Tom is cheating so she follows him to Atlantic City, Susan must start over, and Felicia Tilman has more in store for Paul Young.
