A Note from Bijan (that Mike told me to write)

Hi! I think this is probably the first time you’re hearing from me directly on Patreon, which is weird to think about because Fun City has been airing since 2019. Wild!

Anyway, I write to you with news that is not about Fun City.

So when I’m not making podcasts for Fortunate Horse, or making them for work (at Campside Media, subscribe to Chameleon), I make other stuff online. Lately I’ve been really interested in the contours and conventions of YouTube — by which I mean I’ve started making video essays, as I think the form is kind of fascinating. It’s blogging, but you do it with your face.

A few months ago, I watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and played through Cyberpunk 2077, and I felt a blog coming on. So I wrote it, and then I filmed it.

And then I had another idea. A theory that I wanted to explore about video games: have they gotten harder lately?

I think yes.

But the bigger thing, the thing you might like a little more, is this game I made with some friends. It’s called Turn Out the Lights, and it’s a text adventure. The idea: you’ve been in space for a while, and now it’s time to come home.
This is the first game I think I can say I directed, by which I mean I got out of the way and let a bunch of talented people do excellent work — the game has original art, sound, dialogue, and music. And if you do play it, I hope you enjoy it.

Love,
B.

Watched the essay about Cyberpunk, really excellent stuff. I finished both the game and the anime recently, and it echoes and gives words to a lot of what has been rattling around in my head since. Great job and thanks for posting.
