New analysis supports Antikythera Mechanism calendar results.

Hey Folks,

Many thanks for your patience on the next Antikythera video. As is often the case it's taking much longer to complete the work than I would prefer.

As I continue to work on it, I thought you might like an update on the status of the Front Dial Calendar Ring, and how your Patron support has generated new and interesting progress in the research.

You will recall that during the initial investigations for the mechanism build, I noticed the 365-holes assumption for the calendar ring did not match what can be seen in the wreckage: https://youtu.be/MkKgdq57uOo. Pulling on this thread, and with the help of coauthors (who are patrons and volunteered their help) we set off on a two-year investigation to source original CT data and then analyze and publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal. We presented evidence that the long-presumed concensus view of a 365-day solar calendar is statistically unlikely to be correct. Further, that the more likely interpretation is that the calendar ring of the Antikythera Mechanism is a 354-day lunar calendar: https://bhi.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BHI-Antikythera-Mechanism-Evidence-of-a-Lunar-Calendar.pdf

Now, two independant research groups have found even stronger support for that discovery.

Both Woan & Bayley [ https://bhi.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/07-HJJuly24-AOTM-2.pdf ], and separately, Malin & Dickens [ https://bhi.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/04-HJApril24-AOTM.pdf ] have found with high certainty that the Antikythera Mechanism Calendar Ring is most likely a 354-day calendar. Using the original data from our paper, each of these new papers take different approaches to the analysis and replicate our results with similar or higher precision.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but neither the initial publication of this discovery nor its (twice) independent replication would have occurred without your Patron support. To me, this is citizen science at its very best, and I very much want you to take pride in helping to make it happen.

The finding triggers an interesting cascade of consequences for the existing research. It requires a re-think of much of what has previously been published, and also introduces a new perspective on the nature of the device, and perhaps the people who built it. All of which we will examine together, as the project continues.

Thank you again,

Chris.

Cheers mate :)

Congratulations! I love how your channel has progressed from simple metal working to metal working as an art form to experimental archeology. Keep up the good work!

Hello Murray, I will cover in detail as the build progresses - Cheers :)

With these finding more firmly nailed down. How dose this affect the thinking on the rest mechanism? Thanks for all your work.

Murray Brett

Thanks Bob, aiming for next month - Cheers :)

Thank you Thomas :)

Chris, it's fantastic news that your Team's results have been independently validated by the two other groups! Can you give an estimate (perhaps the month rather than the actual "day") as to when your next Patreon video will be released? Especially if it is on the Antikythera Mechanism!

Bob Vines

Congratulations Chris, what an effort. Well done 👏

Angela Rawlins

Big Congrats to you and the team, Chris, A.T. Thoeni, M. Dubno, and A.T. Ramsey. Very well done, and looking forward to future discoveries.

Duncan Luddite

That’s fantastic progress! I had no idea that you were doing this. By the way, getting published in a peer-reviewed journal as someone not from an acknowledged research institution is no mean feat! Kudos to you and your co-authors

Thomas Herbig

Cheers Kaylee :)

Could not do it without you mate, thank you :)

Thanks Patch!

What a fun conversation that would be!

Thank you Viviane!

Woah, this is SUPER cool! Having your findings replicated/built upon is a high honor! This is also a good example of the old adage about discovery: It starts with a "Huh, I must be missing something?"

Kaylee Kerin

Very cool news and very glad to have helped support this work, even if only a tiny amount. As you said citizen science at its very best.

John S. Fetzik

I'm really pleased to see this news. I've skimmed the two articles, a bit of math there, and I'll stop at the print shop and print them out on the way to the shop this morning, I read technical stuff much better on paper. Congrats again!

John S Dilsaver

This is so amazing! Really incredible work.

Jessica David

I don't what to say just proud that I am, in some small way, a part of this work.

Jeff Armstrong

Chris, this is an astounding outcome!

Patch Arcana

Excellent results. Great to be vindicated and all that research paying off. It still amuses me to think how, the original designer or engineer who conceived of the mechanism, would look at all these musings and speculations and think "Well of course it was done this way, how else would you do it?

veritanuda

Awesome news ! :D I barely understand a thing, but I am quite happy marveling at your stupendous work from afar. Greetings and many encouragements from France !

Viviane Jénoc

No, just the future work - Cheers mate :)

That is very good news Chris. Will any of the ‘cascade of consequences’ impact any of the development work you have already done?

And it is very much appreciated Gert, thank you :)

Being academically educated myself (computer science), I am so gratified at this. Being able to directly support scientific research with major results like this is a rare treat indeed!

Gert Sønderby

They sure do! Regarding possible missing gearing related to our finding, we cover the subject in detail in Part 2 of our article: https://bhi.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BHI-Antikythera-Mechanism-Evidence-of-a-Lunar-Calendar.pdf - Cheers :)

Great news, and long awaited! The cogs of academia turn quite slowly! I reiterate my question to the researchers: What geartrain pieces, now presumably lost, must the mechanism have had in order to function appropriately (and accurately)?
