Patreon Tier "Spruce Up" for 2024

Hi Folks,

Just a quick note to let you know that I have decided to give the Patreon reward tiers a bit of a New Year "spruce up". There's no major changes to the basics; the pricing is the same, the fundamentals of the rewards are the same, and you don't have to do anything at all in response to this message.

The only thing I'd like you to be aware of is that I've decided that in due course, I will start to release The Patron Series videos on YouTube for public viewing.

Several people have let me know that they would like to see The Patron Series videos released on YouTube, and now that I've had time to think about it, I agree. A lot of work goes into those videos, and they only get a subset of Patrons watching them. Given that, it is a bit of mis-allocation of production time to keep them locked up forever, essentially unwatched.

So in future, after one month of early ad-free viewing for Patrons, new episodes will be released onto YouTube for all to enjoy. In due course I will release the already completed Patron series videos to YouTube too.

Any questions on the changes, give me a quick DM here on Patreon or an email and we can have a chat.

Wishing you all the best for the New Year,

Cheers,

Chris.

You have my blessing. I don't support you because of the perks, but in return for what you have already given us, mainly through YT.

Just joined and the change here is what really led me to sign up for patreon as a whole. I hear it in the videos but never really seeked it out until you released the videos to regular YouTube. I saw that I was missing out on a bunch of stuff and it all made sense. I've now signed up for several other creators too. So you did them a small favor too! I just learned from one of the others you might have done a colab with them. (Hand tool rescue). My only suggestion is that maybe you keep them tucked away for 90-180 days instead of just 30. 30 days seems short enough that it might not do you any favors for more signups. Great work, great vision on doing great things.

Brian Roehm

Yeah mate, good call. The patreon subscription for me is given to support your you tube channel, not to receive addl content. Seems a shame to not show them given how much work you obviously put in to those vids.

Alex Pretty

Exclusivity or any of that is absolutely not important to me. I have been a 3 dollar guy for god knows how long. I just cleaned out some 'unused' stuff and decided to up this one as it is by far my favorite but there is no step between $3 and $30. Make a $10 and I'm in.

Dilapidus

I didn’t know about your Patreon till I saw your patron title series and I thought that since I love your channel and what you do I might as well support you and the work that you do and I’m glad you released these on YouTube for public viewing that’s how I found out you have a Patreon

Cooldood06472

"If it's important knowledge, set it free. If it doesn't come back to you, it wasn't important" (or alternatively, "hunt it down and kill it").

Christopher I Lehrich

"Release the knowledge!" some scholar, somewhere, sometime

Michael Gammill

I'm here on Patreon because I like your work and want to support it, not because of any perks that Patreon offers. You should definitely release them!

Sam Nissen

The indicator video appearing was specifically what made me subscribe, so thank you 😄

Gopal Rozendal

Totally support this. I've always found it a shame that such cool projects don't get the attention they deserve.

The Boots

Long time supporter - you releasing that content to YouTube free will not (i think) reduce your number of supporters here, and continue to drive engagement on YouTube.

demonik19

I was not aware of your patreon-only videos until I saw the first one appear on YouTube just earlier today. Of course, I immediately joined your patreon and binged the rest of your backlog. Glad to hear you will be sharing it in its entirety. Very happy to be able to give you my support.

Russell Schwartz

I have less than zero issue with this. In some cases, it would be nice to send your videos to others. If the videos are public, then I can. I think it's a win-win-win. Your level of craftsmanship and presentation is fantastic. I think that the more who pick up on that level of quality, the better it is for everyone.

Jeremy

I'm also fine with it just being early access. More videos to send to my friends! At least those few remaining who don't already watch.

Jonathan Bastow

Great news! I’ll echo the others in that my support is intended to contribute a small amount to the work you’re already doing and not to secure any exclusive benefit. Thanks as always!

Mike Michelizzi

Chris, do what you feel best. I support you on Patreon because of the content not the exclusivity.

James Korman

I have no problem at all with you releasing the Patreon videos. If we get a bit of a sneak peak, good for us, but I'd be contributing what little I'm able to right now regardless of the Patreon video releases. I'm happy to just be amazed while watching the things that you do. :-) As someone else commented, it might be neat to have a little more "behind the scenes" coverage....

Ron Gafron

I prefer the AvE and Zip Ties n Bias Plies models. Patreons get early premiers and unedited content as well as a behind the scenes what's coming pics and messages. Reading the other comments here I don't feel that we are snobs wanting to keep others from viewing. We are simply here to lend you extra support as a gratuity more than anything else. We are with you!

Robert Deremer

Like most other commenters I joined Patreon to support your work and get early. I never expected that access to be totally exclusive. I think a month's delay is plenty. Some content creators I am with release after only 24 hours - that is too soon. Another, who I don't support as a patron, releases after about six weeks.

Jeff Armstrong

Excellent idea, the more people who see the work the better

chris grainge

Completely agree it’s wasteful. I suggested you do this previously and I’m glad you’ve decided to. I’d wish you good luck with them but no doubt they’ll be a hit. 😁

Sam Bishop

I think this is a great idea as it’s really hard to go back and watch the older series. This way I can watch through them all and be sure I’m not missing anything.

VivianTheBunny

I hardly notice patreon stuff. Would much rather it all be on YouTube as I'll actually notice there's videos to watch.

Jake Anderson

I like this decision more videos on youtube to bring more viewers to your wonderful channel.

Jo Heat

That sounds great Chris. I am tossing you a few bucks here and there to help you spread your work, not to buy exclusives.

Jacob Rus

We join you on Patron for more than the vids, admittedly it's the videos that got me to subscribe to you.. I think after you mentioned Patreon on one of your Youtube vids and you were the first Patron I had, until I joined I didn't know about all the extra boards, plans , project ideas, and community. I know I don't join the conversations much and merely lurk but that's just me. If you decide to add the Patron only vids to youtube then good on ya :) , and also we can then share your vids to be watched by people not on Patreon... drag them over here :)

Mark Hobster

TBH I thought you already did do this 😀 If it helps the bottom line and more people get to see your work then why you telling me! lol Go for it 😁

Luke Pettit

youtube videos I can watch on my roku on my 42" TV, patreon videos take several extra steps to do watch on the tv

David Lang

Making the patreon videos public is something I am happy about. For me, it's a hassle to go to patreon to watch the videos so I rarely do. I'd rather have them on my YT subscriptions page.

David Zeller

Fantastic! I wholeheartedly agree. It’d be a shame to keep them locked away and I suspect that most of us found you through you amazing youtube channel. Exclusivity doesn’t matter to me at all.

Jeremy

Yeah i really think you're limiting yourself by keeping them locked up. Its clear you put a ton of effort and time into your videos. They are always of the highest quality and your work is absolutely astonishing. It made me realize i dont need a giant shop to make beautiful things and really helped drive me to make the most out of the space i do have. That is the reason i became a patron, not to see what others can't. Well, and also really for the prints 😁

Kyle Wellman

I'm so glad you're doing this! I support because I want there to be more Clickspring videos, not because I want some kind of exclusive rewards.

Nicholas Kvaltine

That's a wonderful idea, i'm glad for the changes you're making. keep up the amazing work!

Adam Wulf

Wonderful news! I maybe occasionally suggested that, and it's a great thing that others get to see your excellent content. I found you via the Chris Ramsay thing and that was such a fluke. I hate to think how many people who would enjoy your content never actually find you.

Justus Wingert

This makes perfect sense. You have my full support! These videos deserve to be seen by the widest audience possible.

Monica Toth

I joined to support you, the videos were just a nice bonus. I see no issue with this at all, as I'm going to keep supporting you for many months and hopefully years to come, no matter what happens.

Anna Redz

Put 'em up there, I'll just watch them again. You're the cap'n here and I'll follow to the depths.

Dave Cannon

All for it. I've heard it a lot more recent that patreons (is this the right term?) do not see giving as a transactional arrangement, but just an extra support mechanism for the creators we like. Perks are nice, don't get me wrong, but paywalling your content long term is a very costly perk to hand out as you say.

Ben Naylor

I think this is a good change

CJ Shearwood

Hello Chris! I have seen this kind of "tiering" before with other Patreons, makes sense to provide a broader audience with your high-quality videos as well (and to cash in on YT's monetisation, as litle as that can be...).

Zoltan Nemeth

I look forward to this. I often go back and watch the Patreon videos, and it is one of those annoying first-world problems to either have to go through the app, or maintain a separate custom list for those. Much nicer to have them eventually show up on the main channel.

Allen Miller

Chris, this is a good model as you are pouring world class skills into your work. You should be fully published everywhere so many more people can have the introduction to clickspring. I've showed everyone I know your videos

David Tawater

Makes sense. It's a ton of work to have locked into a tiny return when you know there is a better financial return for your hard work. It also shares your master craftsmanship and knowledge with a wider audience who will appreciate and learn from it

Myles Farrell

Dude, that is wonderful. You're really helping your Patreons feel like they are important, but making sure that your work is transparent - cause it's freaking cool work man!! Love it - keep it up my friend!

Robert Petz

Yes, I joined patreon to support you, but your videos are too good to be locked away for good!

Jonathan Numer

Great idea Chris. I see no issues with doing this.
