Introducing The Rose Engine (Happy Anniversary, Mrs Clickspring.)

Hi Folks,

Here is an introduction video for the Rose Engine, a companion machine to the Straight Line Engine. Much like the recent SLE video I have put this video together without narration, as more of a chill out thing. The plate material is fine silver, the pattern is sometimes referred to as 'Escargot' and the pendant is an anniversary gift for my lovely wife.  The enamel is from Milton Bridge, 263 Series K62 Jade. More detail on the casting & finishing of the pendant structure in a later video.

Do please enjoy!

Cheers,

Chris.

Introducing The Rose Engine (Happy Anniversary, Mrs Clickspring.)

Comments

Fantastic, Cheers!

austinbh

In due course, yes. I'm currently still in AM engraving mode - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Do we get a part 2 for this. I’ve been patiently waiting.

austinbh

Hi Dan, 1200 - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Hi Chris! I was wondering what grit the diamond wheel is.

Dan

I'm curious about the process for coating the second side in jade lump. I gather you let the first side cool, then coated the second side, but wouldn't you have a problem with the first side coating when you tried to fuse the second side?

Mark Young

Truly beautiful design... classic in the best way and at the same time futuristic in a gentle sense. Great, great work :)

Roberto Amato

A classic design and a thing of beauty. So much more personal than a thing just bought.

Andrew Smith

Chris, that is really great. Do you know if anyone has blueprinted these older machines or created accurate 3D models of them? I was thinking something like Solidworks models. Would hate to see these lost to antiquity like the Antikythera mechanism you are working so hard to reverse engineer.

Steven Naslund

Congratulations on the anniversary! That's a spectacular gift - from the design through to the execution!

Mike Michelizzi

Wow - a stunning piece!! Can't wait to hear more about the enamelling process... That was a real eye popper for me (only because I'm already familiar with the rose engine)

Hogtown Pens

It's not Jade, it's coloured glass. This is enamelling. Jade is the name of the glass colour. Google enamelling.

Phillip Dimond

wow really interested to hear the explanation on how the jade colored the pendent

daniel poole

Using that machine looks like it takes a lot of time but the results definitely look worth it.

InsaneTD

Now that was just Awesome Chris TFD, GB :)

Graeme Brumfitt

That explains why rose engine videos started showing up in my Youtube recommended videos earlier this week. This is absolutely beautiful. Happy anniversary to you and the Mrs.

Francis

Looks like nice machines are being installed in the living room now. Surely you have to make some nice necklace... ;) Great job AND video as always Chris!

Markos Skoulatos

Incredible

M.janikkkkkk

Chris, Guy Loughridge here, happy anniversary to both you and the Mrs. I believe that the video said that the base material was silver. What temperature does the lump jade need to be fused to the silver? Your wife will be thrilled with such a beautiful piece. Lots of hugs and kisses should be expected.

Guy Loughridge

simply amazing

pie or not

Looks amazing. I've always wanted to get a rose machine to use on wood turning projects, but I just can't justify the expense for a new toy that'll end up collecting dust in a couple years.

Greg Ledet

Stunning result, happy anniversary to you both.

Mark Dymond

Happy anniversary Chris and great work as always. Puts other homemade presents to shame

AMK

Wow.. I’d love to see more detail on the enameling process.

Clayton Firth

Fantastic looking work as always, Chris! happy anniversary to you both!

Stefan

Mrs Clickspring is a lucky lady! Mesmerising work as always Chris!

Evan Crawford

After watching it again, my response is still.............. 😲

James Hickey

Your previous works seems almost agricultural compared to this beautiful piece Chris.

James Hickey

Thank you David!

Clickspring

Many thanks Graham :)

Clickspring

Thank you Dom, Silver :)

Clickspring

Yes that is one way to do it too. Often its easier to simlpy get it roughly true on the plate and then just tap it in by eye. There are also levelling chucks where it can all be dialed in perfectly for those times when it really counts - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Certainly Jason, I will go into much detail in future videos - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Thank you James!

Clickspring

Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Enamel one side, flip, do the other, repeat for several coats, in this case 3 coats per side, grinding in between. There is a slight tendency for the underside to slump a little but not overly so. The final step is a grind to flat and then fire polish - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Cheers mate!

Clickspring

Thank you mate!

Clickspring

Cheers Matt :)

Clickspring

It takes about 20 minutes to cut each side - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Sensational work, and happy anniversary to you both!

David Few

Happy anniversary, Chris and Mrs Clicksping

Graham Rowe

Press Shift + Return instead of just Return.

Eric Greenberg

Probably 30+ years ago, I saw ornamental turning being done with a rose engine lathe and was instantly captivated by the beauty of the process and results. Really enjoying these recent videos featuring your machine. Happy anniversary to Mrs Clickspring and yourself - 35 years (Jade) or 25 (Silver)?

Dominic Peterson

(Well, i guess the editor in this server interface doesnt let you make paragraphs unless you click drag and drop your reply into the window.)

Kas Steel

I thought the plate was supposed to leveled in a parallel plate press while the resin is warm? Or maybe a really accurate cheese press?

Kas Steel

I noticed in the setup of the silver plate on the resin bed that you were hand tweaking to plate level, and that you didnt scratch crossing X and Y origin lines in the resin to align your plate.

Kas Steel

Chris,

Kas Steel

Astounding. I sure hope we get a video someday that goes into the details of how the rose engine works!

jason black

Chris, I bet you could make a short basics on setting up a machine like this in an hour or so worth of finished video! ;) If possible, please do get into some of the intricacies of setting this machine up to make "acceptable" patterns.

Bob Vines

Chris, please give us at least a short description/explanation on how this is done. The piece is beautiful and I'm sure that your wife loves it!

Bob Vines

I'll leave it at Exquisite! Happy Anniversary to you both!

James Korman

This has to be magic…

Russell Reckman

Very nice! How did you apply the jade to both sides? I would think that putting the first side face down in the oven would mess it up?

Cooper Riley

Well done! Your wife is a lucky gal!

LoachMan33

Wow. Simply Wow.

Clifton Ballad

Well, damn. That is a piece of stunning beauty. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Matt Walters

Thank you James :)

Clickspring

Thanks Jim :)

Clickspring

Will do Rich, more to come as soon as I can :)

Clickspring

Thanks very much PJ :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

Cast from sterling silver, using the vacuum casting setup from the most recent TGT with lost resin casting - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Ha ha! very good :)

Clickspring

Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

Thanks John :)

Clickspring

Thanks Stu!

Clickspring

Thanks Grant :)

Clickspring

Out of curiosity, how long did it take you to turn each side once you were setup?

Russell Hammond

When the jade cooled after the furnace, I audibly gasped. Excellent work!

James Bryant

I was only joking when I said “next the rose engine” on the SLE video, but it turns out I was right. Where did you get them? Great job.

Jim Porter

Sneaky way to justify the purchase on a 'new ' machine with the wife, make the little lady a beautiful bauble...😇👍 Please do a video (talking) about the machine. Would love to know more.

Rich Cizik

Stunning piece, amazing machine! Congratulation to you both. I'm beginning to realize you Are an alchemist...the way that jade transformed from mortar and pestle, then the wicking to the 1500° and final finish. @¿@ Thanks Chris...Really Looking forward to more details.

PJ

Very impressive.

Colin Dick

Really cool and beautiful. How did you make the frame/border?

Unogazzy

An elegant machine for a more civilized age.

Lucia

Also, we like to hear you talking it is a vital part of your videos lol 😂 just saying

Jonathan Numer

What's funny is that I am a jeweler, I started out watching you when you were making clocks. Never thought I'd see the day when you would make jewelry lol

Jonathan Numer

Absolutely speechless. What a lovely piece.

Matthew Wilson

Nicely done, I always thought that clockmakers and jewlery have a lot in common

John Gentzel

Wow, that's crazy cool! Congratulations Chris and Mrs. Clickspring!

Stu

Ha ha! Thank you Peter :)

Clickspring

Thanks Oliver :)

Clickspring

Thanks Gary :)

Clickspring

Its a cool thing to watch when it happens :)

Clickspring

Thank you!

Clickspring

Thanks mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate!

Clickspring

nice work

Grant McKinna

For some reason the piece reminds me of something from Lord Of The Rings… I guess that makes you one of the elven masters!

Peter Kransz

Congratulations on your anniversary Chris 🥳

Oliver Warlow

Every time this machine comes out, I know it's going to be one of the most mesmerizing videos, and whatever you're making is going to be absolutely beautiful. Did not disappoint. Congratulations to you and your wife

Gary Levario

I would not have expected the water to rush from the jade to the paper (given the increased surface area).

Maarten Daalder

A gorgeous piece, and a gorgeous machine!

Casper Harris

Congratulations on the new machine!

Boguslaw Smalec

Awesome! Always great to see some more clickspring content, keep it up!
