Making a Watchmaker's Faceplate for the Sherline Lathe - Part 3

Comments

Hi Ralph, primary references for its structure are the descriptions and images found in Daniels’ “Watchmaking”, Henry B. Fried’s “Bench Practices For Watch And Clockmakers”, and “The Modern Watchmakers Lathe And How To Use It” by Archie B Perkins. These references describe the anatomy and use of the tool but have no construction drawings; I will be publishing my drawings at the completion of the project - Cheers :)

Chris, I have a Sherline lath/mill combo and was looking at the reference book you suggested but could not find and drawings/mat'l lists. Did you draw all of this or where is your source for doing this? cheers Ralph

Ralph McCoy

Staggeringly beautiful work, as per normal!

Kenneth Carlile

Always worth the watch. Thanks for this and all the work you do Chris!

Jon Calon

as always Chris....outstanding work!!!

EVAN WINES

"Magneticae Attractionis!' - Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you Graeme!

On my last project, I tried for at least an hour, making that summoning motion with my fingers to get the parts to assemble themselves and leap into my hand, but I just couldn't get it to work.

Leonard Solomon

Rite Chris, still don't need one but it is Gorgeous n damn the attention to detail is just out of this world Awesome! TFS, GB :)

Graeme Brumfitt

Maybe. Its going to be fun seeing where this all leads :)

Clickspring

Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate. Yep I reckon you could pre-polish; probably still need a little touch up after as well as the work on the flats - Cheers :)

Clickspring

Beautiful :) I have the parts of a Swiss made Watchmaker's Faceplate that needs work/alteration to get the best out of it on my 6mm Lorch lathe. Looking forward to getting that done, and there are some useful tips coming up in you videos (as always). Question: Why not polish the wire before making the spring? Does it scuff up too much? Cheers

Duncan Luddite

Your videos and the things you make are equally beautiful.

Scaredyfish

I just love this attention to detail and it makes me muse how the skill you demonstrate are just echoes of the past where people did incredible details and all by hand. Fascinating stuff. Thanks!

veritanuda

Carl Sagan once said that a Watch implies a watchmaker. So does a Watchmakers faceplate imply that another watch is going to be made?

Stephen Williams

Awesome mate, so pleased :)

Clickspring

Chis, I had a big day today, few life issues, how can watching someone do some machining completely relax myself, Ready for bed now :)

Gary Bodnar

Also, the little humorous effects have been a hallmark of the channel since forever. In fact, all the others might be copying Chris!

Gert Sønderby

Cheers mate!

Clickspring

Didn't mean to offend you, guess it shows you never know who the soft people are that only accept praise.

Kerrey Johnson

barely into the video and my mate Chris is out here polishing springs. Love it!

Stubbs

Thank you Brandon :)

Clickspring

Mate, If I love it, it goes in - house rules. Cheers :)

Clickspring

Thank you mate!

Someday, Chris, two thousand years from now, they'll recover a box of your shop-made tools from a shipwreck off the coast of Australia, and produce countless documentaries, research papers, and YouTube series about it. Marvelous work, as always!

Brandon

Sad to see you lowered yourself to doing those stupid video editing tricks that have been done to death, but glad to see the new video up and excellent work as always.

Kerrey Johnson

Stunning, mate!

Stu

Thanks Andy :)

Clickspring

Ha ha! Thank you mate!

Clickspring

Thank you mate :)

Clickspring

It's okay, Chris. You don't have to justify polishing springs to us. We all know you just can't help yourself! Great video.

Grant Hullinger

The parts are so perfect they look like 3D renders. It's rather bizarre.

Andy Pugh

If you made a 500 part series on making a watch, I’d watch every second of it. (Also please make a watch haha)

Caleb Ferguson

That would be an excellent contender, thanks for suggesting

Clickspring

Thank you Paul!

Clickspring

Cheers mate!

Clickspring

Have you thought about using rhodium plating for the brass parts?

Robert

That's not machining, that's art....as usual!!!

Paul Russell

The jump cuts at the end were great - pure magic 🤣

Hogtown Pens

So pleased you enjoyed it Mark :)

Clickspring

Cheers mate :)

Clickspring

Thank you John!

Clickspring

These videos are intoxicating to watch. The timing of the cuts, and the occasional use of fast forward make the pacing just right.

Mark Young

Gorgeous!

Damian Sutter

You do not just make parts you make jewelries!
