Update, August 2022.

Hey folks,

Just a quick update for you: Work continues on the next Antikythera video. As usual, its taking longer than I'd like, so thank you for your patience. I've attached a short clip showing some of the fine detail work that will be a feature of this next video, with much practical use of simple sticks & stones. As always, send me through any questions or comments you have below, and do keep in mind your open invite to the weekly catchup I host on Discord every Sunday 2200 UTC, click here to join: https://discord.gg/twFHDxhc5J

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris, when you're not making your own, what brand needle files do you recommend?

Grant Johnson

Chris, I would love to hear at the end, your time and effort into the build, and an idea of what you think was a reasonable build time in production. You have spent a long time documenting the build, but if there was one maker, would they have been able to create 10 over a lifetime? And then, how long before wear in the gears would have created a problem in the system that would have caused a loss of accuracy?

Αλλά φυσικά!

Don't you mean "Ευχαριστώ φίλε!"

Ready and waiting Chris, I will wait and be ready for when you produce your next marvel in this series! TFS, GB :)

Ha ha! Terrific mate :)

This is the most labor intensive part. Granted, thinking how to build the damn thing took a lot of effort, and trying to figure out what it really said is also labor intensive, you are still doing one of the most important studies into this device.

Kevin Reardon

I ended up making a slight adaption of that vise for my home "shop" (it also doubles as my office, so only hand-held and mostly not powered tools for ease of stowing). Still no fancy way of clamping it, I am using just an ordinary clamp.

Ingvar

Wait - you're MAKING something and doing a VIDEO about it? LOL - yeah, take the time you need. :)

Micheal Malsed

Not going to lie, every time you post an Antikythera video, I'm half expecting you to just start talking in Koine Greek. Keep up the good work!

sam

On a side note: How's the peer reviewing going on your team's paper?

Chris Muncy

Good morning Chris! The work pause button has been pressed as anything from Clickspring takes precedence hehe.

Funny how tool, once made, finds its uses. Even if its ancient vise design.

rolf redford

Yes it is, although its getting used for almost all small parts work now, I find it indispensable. I will do a full roundup of the tooling as a summary video at the end of the project, there are still a couple of key tools to add to the collection - Cheers :)

It might be interesting to see at some point how the historical tools you made are holding up. For example the leather on the vise is starting to show its use over the years.

As always, looking forward to it :) Keep doing what you do.
