Health Update October - Also Dianna wants to share something

Hello everyone,

Small update on Dianna. Her crash extended for a fairly long time and there hasn’t been any significant improvements in the last few months. It’s been a roller coaster of her making small gains, and then having set backs. It’s been difficult and discouraging. But her doctor and others are working hard to help her combat the disease. Unfortunately the news is that she still can’t get out of bed or do any mindful activity. At this point she is resting diligently and optimistic she will come out of this crash.

Please know that your support goes a long way in supporting her and her family. Thank you for sticking with us - this has (and will) go on for longer than any of us could have imagined.

Dianna has a digital photo frame in her room that shows her pictures that transition every few minutes. A few days ago, she asked for pictures from you, her patrons. She would love to see something fun, or cute, or you holding up a sign with words of encouragement. I know she likes dogs and wouldn’t mine cute photos of them. Or even better a picture of a dog holding a sign :)

If you’re interested in participating and sharing fun/cute/encouraging photos, you can email them to this address here for our team to download and use them - photos@physicsgirl.org

Please keep all photos appropriate. Any inappropriate photos will be only seen by the team and immediately deleted. Thank you!

Or peewee park. Also so funny https://youtu.be/zovrM0LdrZ0?si=-D4scwK4ptgBRShd

Happiness and laughter I think is great medicine. I saw that Dianna wanted pictures of us and pets to have with a get well message. I would have my brother's golden Retriever "Flat head" do it but she's digging.. but if you haven't seen this youtube clip "owl kitty" this will definitely make you smile. I hope this video clip reaches you and makes you laugh, so long as it doesn't hurt to laugh 💓 If you arnt able to click on it, I used Google lense. It seems to work that way. But it's owl kitty jurassic park https://youtu.be/W85oD8FEF78?si=HbyKNGrjA2euakwO

Alexander James

Same as above. She is the reason I have a Patreon account.

Gvrick

I only have 2 patron subscriptions you, physics girl and my rv works. I subscribed to your channel today, Christmas day. Merry Christmas! Please get well soon. You are important!

Alexander James

Hope the picture frame is still up and taking new submissions!!! I asked my dog Snoopy if he wanted to participate and he said yes with the greatest enthusiasm. We have some (so, so many) photos on the back burner to send now and will work on the sign piece as well

Christian Rourk

I pray for Dianna to get well soon! We want her back teaching us Physics with new videos. Definitely will keep on supporting you on Patreon through these unfortunate times.

The animals I live with are the spiders in the basement, the occasional silverfish I rescue from the sink (I call them little dragons, they take care of the dust mites) and the occasional mosquito keeping me awake at night. They all refuse to pose for photos, though. 😁 And while they are small, not everybody considers them to be cute, I have to admit.

Peter Guhl

Sending love! ❤️ Get well soon! Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help!

Dianna, now that I’m on my second week of COVID, I have a very small, distant inkling about what it’s like for you. Frankly, it sucks. All I have is cats but I’ll send you over a picture of my spirit animal… my friends bulldog.

We just sent a photo of Hiroshi for Diana. In the mail we WRONGFULLY wrote "spring of 2007" instead "spring of 2024" in reference when to expect the trial-results of the possible Covid/CFS-cure named "BC007". The trials are currently running in Erlangen (Germany). Talk to Dr. Dr. Bettina Hohberger at the University of Erlangen.

Sebastian & Hiroshi

Hiroshi is all about cute dog photos! We totally will send one!

Sebastian & Hiroshi

We wish you a complete and quick recovery Dianna. My students love your videos and I loved sharing them with the kids. It's important to see successful women in the STEM fields and you inspire so many girls to go into science. Thanks and our best to you and yours.

Startet to donate for Diana. I wish her all the best in order to recover. Also a physics student. May god help her. Greetings from Germany

My sister has had CFS for about 8 years, so I can share what I know from living with her and supporting her: A "crash" in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a notable decline in functioning. Crashes can be caused by anything that pushes the person beyond their limit: walking too far, reading for too long, trying to sit up in bed, or even thinking. Limits aren't constant, so it can be difficult to know what will trigger a crash at any one time. There's no telling whether and when someone will regain the level of functioning they had before a crash.

@Cy 'kkm' K'Nelson — After reading the NY Times article it is obvious you don't have a clue about science. I do. I am 73 and graduated in 1973 with a BA in geology and then went on to study paleontology and evolutionary biology for my MS. The article is not talking about some far-out scientific hypothesis, but is talking about the well researched-science concerning serotonin and how decreased levels of serotonin in the gut has an effect on long Covid. In addition, this research was published in Cell, a peer-reviewed journal. Clearly you are clueless and your remarks are not only disorganized, but also completely misinformed. If you are going to criticize science, then go study it. Otherwise, remember, science gave you your phone, your computer, the medicines you take when you get sick, the gasoline you put in your car, your car itself, the clothes you wear to say nothing about the general welfare you live in. So don't comment when you know nothing. It merely proves your lack of knowledge. As for whether this would help Diana, who I have followed on YouTube for years, I don't know. However, given this research is recent, it may be that her doctors or her boyfriend are not aware of it. This gives them the chance to research it.

Also, it might be a silly question, but I’ve only previously heard ‘crash’ in the context of cardiac failure. What does it mean? (Please don’t feel compelled to take time - random on the internet asking questions is most definitely at the rock bottom of ANYONE’s to-do list). I realise from the context of your updates that’s not the case, and seems to be related to energy levels and an ability to function, but equally those words I just used feel like they trivialise what’s happening.

Alexander Livingstone

I hope things are going well. I’m sure you’re all over the research, but I came across this, that might be of passing interest. It is related to COVID itself, not long COVID but who knows what influences might help. https://newatlas.com/health-wellbeing/fungus-gut-severe-covid-mycobiome/

> I've never heard of COVID, even long COVID continuing for over 3 months, let alone 9 months. This is why modern medical research is never built upon the statistics of one point. > Do her doctors have an explanation for this? The syndrome of long COVID is so similar to ME/CMS, a well-known chronic disease, that the current thinking is that it's one and the same. It would be fair to say that ME/CMS etiology is largely unknown. COVID-19 is the only malady that has a strong statistical etiological link with ME/CMS. I have no idea whether Diana interested in these details; I'm explaining this to you. Cases of long COVID are known in tens of thousands. ME/CMS is the overwhelmingly dominating complication; note that only unquestionable cases are entering the medical statistics: it is not impossible that the long COVID and ME/CMS is one and the same, just not the sequelae are not prominent enough to be counted as the case of ME/CMS. > My [niece] was in a similar situation, doctors blamed COVID, but it turned out to be[...] I'm sorry to hear about your daughter indeed; misdiagnoses happen. As a practical advice, in case of any crippling disease, take a second opinion, i.e. go to a different doctor. It's a common practice, and both doctors should be aware that you did, and communicate after that. Usually, the main treatment doctor encourages the patient to get the second opinion, and may even recommend another doctor (ethics prohibits their communication about the same patients until the second doctor completes the workup and forms an opinion—to remain as unbiased as possible). I hope that she's able to manage her illness and lead a normal life. But let me repeat: the modern medical research is never built out of one statistical point. Exactly because of such cases. I'm failing to understand the point of your message. Was it to educate yourself? If that was the case, I gave you enough pointers to research, but I cannot help noting that your choice of venue—satisfying your general interest in the tape of a seriously ill person—is unethical to the point of being uncanny; I'm sorry for being this straightforward, but it's the best path when communication with a stranger on the 'Net. Frankly, a single web search for "CDC long COVID" would have given you the same basic points to continue self-education. Was it to give a suggestion to a group of specialists in long COVID? If you were a doctor specialising in the disease, which I, to be frank, doubt, that you wouldn't have chosen this comment thread as a communication route. Of course, they would very likely appreciate someone with a deep expertise, but you'd contact the family first, then the treatment team, as is customary. And if you're not a long COVID treatment specialist, as your first sentence suggests, then I'm kinda discombobulated: what was your goal. If, heaven save, you or your family member got ill to the point of being unable to get out of bed, you wouldn't think about one case with similar symptoms known to you—you'd call a doctor. Diana indeed had contacted a doctor, and, mind you, much more than one: it's all in this blog.

This youtube video suggests that cannabis users do better when they catch the covid virus. I wonder if "wonder brownies" might encourage Diana's immune system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxarZ6tK6nc

Hang in there Diana! You will get out of this, the sun will shine again! Love and good vives from Spain <3

I agree with most of that, but I still don't mind comments like the link Mike Gaston posted. They are indeed not applicable to any specific individual's treatment, but to me they do show that the topic has attention and is being brought to the attention of more people by being published. That gives me some hope on the long term for general structural improvement. So I don't see such comments as input to Dianna's medical team, but more as general background information, awareness creation and a show of the awareness that exists. Just seeing that work is being done on the topic (some being in very early stages, some hopefully closer to becoming applicable, I can't even judge) does give me a feeling that Dianna is not alone in this on a much larger scale than the people immediately around her, even though it's not directly applicable. And as with all science: not to just be taken for granted.

Bart Barenbrug

I know that your intentions are the best and laudable, and it goes without saying, my brother in good deeds, that I highly appreciate your willingness to help Diana. Perhaps you may possibly misunderstand that most new science on just any disease tanks at some stage. Diana's treatment team is not _doing science_ on her as a subject, they _treat_ her as an _individual_ person, with all that benefit vs. possible side effects balance and other stuff. Everyone's treatment is adjusted by doctors to a specific person. Besides, you likely know that most published research is wrong: it's a seminal (Ioannides 2005) paper—not because of bad science (but bad work of and over-hyping everything by the Uni's PR depts plays a role); it's just how statistic works. Even of confirmed, reconfirmed, then worked on by other people for a couple years to turn it into a possible treatment modality, then passes Phase I of safety protocol, then maybe reaches Phase II with a permission of limited volunteer enrollment. It won't be missed by the Diana's medical team by then—they are narrow specialists in this disease, and read all pertinent journals and scan open trial databases. I feel and share your disappointment, as you've had the best intentions, but this is how the pipeline works from pure science to a proven safe medical modality of treating the disease; even then, it may be applicable only in specific cases—no serious disease is one and the same, and exists in multiple variants; also, individual analyses numbers and their dynamics in time, health history and even sex and age and what's not may influence the treatment team to decide to try the novel treatment or find it unfit for her specific case. Let's just trust Diana's doctors and wait. We all want to help speed up her recovery, but we all should have the wisdom to separate things that we can change from those which we cannot and may only accept with serenity, not anxiety. Just always remember that he's in good hands, both her burnt-out husband Kyle, her former team supporting her, and, of course, her medical team.

Cy 'kkm' K'Nelson

I'have been Diana's neither subscriber nor so called “Patreon” before I learned of her affliction. I occasionally watched vids that others had linked: that's how I know about her YT science communication work, but that's all. I'm a picky consumer, and no one's work is a hundred-dollar bill to be appreciated by everyone without exception. But this situation is different. There is something that makes us all equal, and morally obliged to hold the line with our colleagues, regardless of past disagreements. I'll continue my support as long as it takes Diana to get back on her feet and mentally recover, which I sincerely wish her to do soon. She's so young and so full of life that my eyes are watering when I reading these bulletins reporting little improvement. Guys, if you allow me a piece of advice, put a prominent note asking please don't to leave comments about new possible treatments etc. picked from the news. People do leave these notes out of their best intention, but they are the product of college PR dept [mis]reading a paper printed yesterday, not yet having received critique, correction, confirmations, non-confirmation or sending them Titanic from other researchers. Your treatment team is aware of them; they make no useful information for you in this comment roll, and you're sticking with the same team anyway who make the best out of new information. It will save these best-willing people their time, and leave the comment tape more informative. I'm a cat person, not a dog person, and outlived more cats than enemies, but I'll try my best to get something funny and inspiring with DALL-E. Can't promise it: sometimes my attempts don't end well in anything sensible, or good enough to my taste, however hard I try to convince the thing. But I'll certainly share anything I'd be anything that'd be worth sharing.

I've never heard of COVID, even long COVID continuing for over 3 months, let alone 9 months. Do her doctors have an explanation for this? Is this due to preexisting health issues? I hope she recovers. My neice was in a similar situation, doctors blamed COVID, but it turned out to be an autoimune disease she picked up at birth in China. She's better now, but talk of COVID sends her into a panic.

Dianna, I sent you a picture of me in my happy place. Out on the water. I hope you will get back to your happy place soon :)
