I found this in a folder but can't remember what it was for. I rarely draw scenes and seated poses. Anyways, these ladies will have to take the bus home.

More Other Suns

Niklas Jansson post More Other Suns

I threw some colours on these and added a few of the Hegemony ships, going for a uniform B&W colour scheme.

I have also updated by Tesserae Terra page, just polishing the sketches a bit and adding colour.

Other Worlds TTRPG redesigns

Niklas Jansson post Other Worlds TTRPG redesigns

Other Worlds is a rather obscure TTRPG from 1983. I haven't seen much (if any) fan art for it. Other Suns uses a system similar to BRP (Basic Role Playing / Runequest) by Chaosium, but perhaps they didn't license it like the Swedish Drakar & Demoner did.

So, it uses a D100 percentage system with some D20 and D6 rolls here and there. I haven't looked into how it works exactly, but there are a lot of tables... It wasn't unusual that games from the '70s and early '80s desperately wante...

Amiga detour

Niklas Jansson post Amiga detour

Commodore CDTV Cube: I imagine this concept as slimmed down, upgraded late '90s rerelease, as you wouldn't be able to fit normal CDTV guts into such a small space. I gave it monster-specs, as far as the Amiga 500-base goes. Honestly I don't much care for the early CD-game era... it was all bluster.

Gave it a fancy wired dual analog controller. I suppose with the center buttons, the analog sticks can't be in the way for the thumb, so I placed them high.

Slim 5.25" drive: Unlike wit...

Last Armageddon Part II

Niklas Jansson post Last Armageddon Part II

Here are some more monsters from the game. They're pretty relaxing to draw, and it's fun to wrestle with the more abstract designs. There's often something fun in there to latch onto and drive as a main theme.

I discovered that some of the monsters have been redesigned in e.g. the PC Engine version. I've yet to play any of the versions though and there aren't any sprite sheets that I know of, just a few incomplete fan sites.

Last Armageddon

Niklas Jansson post Last Armageddon

Last Armageddon is a Japanese RPG which I had a soft spot for until I learned about its convoluted story and quirky gameplay through a fan translation. It's general idea with regular monsters vs twisted monsters vs vs robots vs aliens is fun and kind of "metal". If nothing else its intro is worth watching. I think the game would be more fun as a Pokémon or Digimon slant. Anyway, I wanted to draw and modify some of the designs from it.

The playable monsters are:

Minotaur, Cyclops,...

December Stuff

Niklas Jansson post December Stuff

This month I've been busy updating my Zelda page, and dealing with some holiday matters – like mimicking the social behavior the of other bipeds, smiling, and saying the things. Anyways, my Zelda page can be found on my site but supplied here are also a few 1:1 work resolution images.

I also wrote a short story for the whole silly underpants factory in space post...

More 40K Miniature Lineups

Niklas Jansson post More 40K Miniature Lineups

Alright, I've been adding even more stuff to these old lineup sheets since the last post. Some comments:

The Votann dwarfs appears to be slightly short "Bara" body type people, for those in the know. They're quite different from the much shorter old Dwarfs and Squats. I don't have many new GW miniatures so I'm snagging them from photos and catalog shots and scaling after base size (which isn't always easy due to ever-changing base sizes). I've scaled most things after "Oldhammer" miniat...

Space Crusade Mega Sheet

Niklas Jansson post Space Crusade Mega Sheet

I thought I'd simply touch up an image from 2017 but ended up spending quite a bit of time on it than expected. I better post it before it escalated further and the month is over. It's a rather massive lineup sheet, looking at it now. Getting figure proportions to look right is very tricky since there's no consistent scale and it's easy to get lost. I had to use a lot of reference and look for averages.

Anyways, Space Crusade is a game I keep returning to in my thoughts. The miniatures ...

40K Lineups

Niklas Jansson post 40K Lineups

I've been painting my old 6mm Space Marine EPIC recently and thought I'd draw some 40K monsters... it would be fun to illustrate the whole rule book but that sure would be a project. I ended up doing this lineup instead.

Beasts of Nurgle - These have a variety of models. In the lore they act like slobbering eager puppies, but they're also slugs so I'm not quite sure how they move.

Nurglette - The image of it with a hanging tongue just appeared in my mind. Probably my favoute conce...

Niklas Jansson post Samus Night Sketch

I have never drawn the actual Super Metroid suit and wanted to have a go at it Just like with the original suit, the design varies a quite bit between drawings, even by the same artist. I kept most of the detail but did a little arbitrary colour swap. The background has hints of Crateria...

Zoids Again

Niklas Jansson post Zoids Again

I've been working on this project on and off for a few weeks now, nudging and polishing. Image comments:

The Serpent is one of the older Zoids. it's supposed to be a snake but it has these big wheels unlike the other snake (Stealth Viper) which is more of a regular snake. What could be done with the wheels? I thought it would be fun if it could roll up along the inner circumference so it's less of a rigid S rolling around.

The Guysak... is oddly named for a scorpion. I redesigned ...

More Zoids

Niklas Jansson post More Zoids

I've done some more of these '80s ZOID redesigns. These are posable kits and not windup toys.

Glidoler: I turned the feet into high-heel jet pods, channeling a bit of that Valkyrie Ostrich feel.

Hidocker: I gave this one a bit of a longer neck (could be done by threading neck segments onto a metal wire?). Perhaps it could have some sort of sensor thing on the head.

Hellrunner: I gave this a sniper rifle tail.

The weapons are from the action figure scale of ZOIDS but wi...

Obscure Zoids!

Niklas Jansson post Obscure Zoids!

When I was a kid in the 1980s there was an old couple in my town who ran a small toystore. It was one of those stores which – despite its size – managed to carry a while lot of interesting things. I specifically remember a piece of shelf space stocked with what's now considered Original European Release Zoids.

What they didn't carry however were the sort of neat Attack Zoids – smaller simple kits which might have been sold with sweets, kind of like gachapon kits. I only found out...

More Final Fantasy Legend Stuff

Niklas Jansson post More Final Fantasy Legend Stuff

I did a few more pixel-overs. It's at some 115 now – which feels like a lot but is still somehow less than Pokémon Gen 1. Speaking of Pokémon, it would perhaps be more fun to do evolutions of the depicted and recognisable SaGa designs rather than trying to draw the named ones which reuse the portraits. Sprawling out too much visually (towards generic greek/fantasy monsters) could "disperse" the soul of the setting, I'm thinking.

The map graphics proved problematic... I wanted to do ...

Sprites from Sa-Ga aka Final Fantasy Legend

Niklas Jansson post Sprites from Sa-Ga aka Final Fantasy Legend

I remember this game having a pretty great atmosphere, but never managed to fully play through any of the three gameboy games. They're a bit different from your typical jrpg, with limited lives, disposable weapons, random evolutions.

Anyways, I wanted to do some sprite pixel-overs and picked the first and second game, mainly reworking the outlines, volume shading and proportions so the sprites match side-by-side. Gameboy sprite work tend to be quite high contrast because that sho...

Urbanmech and Ogre

Niklas Jansson post Urbanmech and Ogre

I don't know much about the Battletech universe byound having played few mechwarrior games. Being a fan of pill-bots I decided to have a go at the Urbanmech. I gave it cat ears. It appears there are no height data in the games, just some sort of tonnage. Going by a density of 1.0, then 7-8 meters seems appropriate.

Maybe I should draw a few of the other ones?

Last Imperium Sheet Updates

These big sheets have a few additions, like all terrain vehicles, a few new figures, and a general cleanups/edits. I might need to be careful about designing player characters as it's unwise to make them so different it becomes difficult for the party to stay together. Maybe the floating black worm can deflate or something.

These sheets are 1:1 work size (flattened) and pretty large.

Tandberg & Dragon 32

Niklas Jansson post Tandberg & Dragon 32

The Tandberg keyboard was actually a terminal keyboard thingy which connected to a central mini computer – and "mini" here actually meant the computer was about the size of a couple of side-by-side noisy fridges. My dad worked as a journalist back when computers arrived in homes and offices. The newspapers then had just moved off lead type printing and onto digital systems, so his workplace picked up a second hand Norsk Data (Norwegian Data) system... which was already dated – tech moved ...

ABC80

Niklas Jansson post ABC80

I saw this "Advanced Basic Computer for the 1980s" computer in use as a kid. It was made in collaboration with a local TV set maker called Luxor, so it came with a little TV-monitor that actually supplied power. The ABC80 served as a Swedish office/school type PC and was around in the Vic-20 and C64 days (in production 1978-1985). Kids in the '80s used the C64 while these rotted though.

The BASIC was faster than that of other contemporaries, but the display was limited to 40x24 characte...

Galactic Adventures & Atari XE

Niklas Jansson post Galactic Adventures & Atari XE

I finally drew some Galactic Adventures stuff. The lore for these aliens is a bit too full of silly references, but here's some excerpts from the manual anyways:

>>>EDIT: Added the Cygnian bigbird and fixed some stuff.

  Cygnian Str-10, Dex-16, End-5, Spd-5, Int-19, Sen-7

The Cygnians are essentially 2 meter tall, brightly colored, thin, flightless birds. Their vestigal wings are now used only for display. To get some idea of the effec...

BBC Micro Concept

Niklas Jansson post BBC Micro Concept

I made another wacky keyboard. Number and currency stuff for completely left-handed entry. Experimental placement of BS, DEL and arrows on the spacebar row rather than the usual modifier keys. I put the more commonly used characters as primary (parenthesis > brackets). The Beeb had a clear plastic cover which could hold function key row papers (here for Elite). Love that dotty owl logo. Reminds me of the dotty "It's a Sony" one.

Interestingly the system's joystick port had two button...

Case Sketches

Niklas Jansson post Case Sketches

I'm not sure why doing these is so amusing, but I was compelled to do a few more.

First I did a left-handed / mirrored C64 case. This is not for anything in particular – I was just goofing around. As a leftie using a traditional 104 key keyboard feels a bit like swinging a baseball bat with the off hand, hence the flip.

I have honestly forgotten what the special C64 keys do and had to look it up. It's up to the editor in memory to interpret the keycodes, except for Restore which...

Utopia stuff

Niklas Jansson post Utopia stuff

I was thinking of revisiting my old Utopia project. Utopia is/was a strategy game for the Amiga 500, SNES and DOS. Think of it as a mix of Sim City and tower defense (but very slow paced). Part of the appeal of the game is just seeing the little buildings and tanks, and finding out what will attack you (a neighboring alien colony). It's very different from modern RTS games which are mostly competitive. Perhaps it's closer to RimWorld in feel.

Back in 2006 this project sidetra...

Here's a full-rez of the characters from the Jinglypuff story. I put a low-rez version of the image in chapter 3. Apparently one can hotlink images directly in the text over at RoyalRoad, though the autoscaling is a bit wonky, squishing the images.

Alright, the thing passed moderation (maybe it's a anti-spam measure?), so here's the link. Also attaching my raw .txt doc (not an .rtf this time). I'm not sure if one can edit chapters over on RR... I'm wary of publishing since there always seem to be egregious mistakes cropping up.

Tyranid Humanids

Niklas Jansson post Tyranid Humanids

These showed up in my mind and I just had to jot them down. I wanted to play around with the Tyranid detailing on humanoid shapes. Perhaps they belong to a very special hivefleet? I could imagine a short story where humanoid mutated Tyranids show up, maybe cut off from the general hivemind and doing their own thing, even being capable of speech and acting very weird. But I suppose that's practically the role of the Genestealers.

Speaking of Genestealers, the "soulsucker" is from Space C...

Niklas Jansson post Miscellaneous

Here goes a quick piece exploring what a human Tau thrall might look like with Tau-manufactured equipment. I don't really know if they continue using human templates or not... maybe it's in the lore.

Also Slaanesh CSM (Chaos Space Marine) sketch with realistic proportions. I based it off the design from the Space Crusade board game. I've always preferred the older more distorted CSM designs.

Also, a few simple weapons for the Last Imperium project. I wonder if there's any point to...
